Topic: Use that Combat Speeder!

At the risk of sounding patronizing, I want to give a heads-up to to any Rebel players out there.

I was looking through the Jan. 3rd Mos Espa CG for screenshots and noticed again something that I've noticed a good deal of times before: the Alliance Combat Speeder is woefully underused. It's almost only used for transport, and even then players dump it to fight on foot as soon as they get to the front line.

What it seems a lot of people don't realize is that the Combat Speeder is the Rebel counterpart of the AT-ST (at least I think that's its role). The walker has superior firepower and armour, but the Speeder has a far greater speed and agility and the ability to carry passengers, and the gun has as much firepower as the tripod MKII the Officer deploys. In fact, I often use it as a 'mobile MKII' - I'll drive it into the path of the enemy, place it in partial cover, and man the gun. Ideally I'll gun down whoever gets close, for then to retreat and repair/heal when low on hit points. If your team mates are in the mood for teamwork, they might just place a shield or two at your speeder and help keep it repaired, further increasing its deadliness.

Another way to use it is to get a gunner and go harass lonewolf AT-ST's - you can drain lots and lots of AT-ST hit points while the clumsy steel machine fruitlessly tries to get your nimble little vehicle in its sights, and with passengers going along for the ride to do additional damage, keep enemy infantry away or keep your vehicle in working condition, you can do lots of damage. Also remember that the thing is excellent when it comes to running down whoever doesn't have time to duck big_smile .

Bottom line is, I strongly recommend you use this thing for other things than camping the Imperial landing zone on Mos Espa wink . The Imps have 4 AT-ST's on Mos Espa 64? Big deal, you have four repulsorlift-driven heavy repeating blasters with passenger space! Line them up along the southern edge of the town along with shields, mines, tripod MKII's and other goodies, and mow those geckos down tongue !

Re: Use that Combat Speeder!

Another thing is that people rarely use the stationary blasters or place shields for them. I've seen a lot of newbies placing shields in between the blaster and the enemy when they could place it behind the blaster so only the barrel of the gun pops out. Shielded blasters can be devastating in tight space defense. The medic grenades don't do anything to the person manning them because of engine limitations, frags and EMP grenades are the only real threat.

Not to mention destroy them. It's good to come back to an area you've previously been driven out of to find your trusty MKII is still there and fully operational smile .

When I see a deployed tripod repeater, I make sure to slap a couple Proton Grenades onto it cool .

I agree totally with you SamZi. However, speaking from a newbie POV, in the heat of battle it's hard to lay down the shield EXACTLY where it needs to be to cover the gun, yet leave the barrel outside. It took me quite a few tries before I could get it where it should be. Not to mention, that I didn't know for a long time that you could pick some things back up after you deploy them, namely the shield. Even now, I still have to place the shield once or twice to make sure it's just right. On the other hand, I have seen some noobs place it meters in front of the shield... Now that's just DUMB! smile

Re: Use that Combat Speeder!

Hehe, I remember my beginner days... a MKII had been set up nicely in, I think, the Slave Quarters, and to help out I placed a shield - which blocked the line of fire of the gun. Having not yet learned the magical "G key"-to-pick-up-shield-trick, I ran from the scene in embarrassment big_smile . (If I see someone else do this now, I just tell them "g to pick up shield" over the chat. No need to make a fuzz.

But yes, the deployable tripod is awesome. Once at the end of a CG we dug in at the Commercial District with at least one MKII and a Combat Speeder, defended by shields. We mowed down stormie attack from two directions until they flanked the CP through a back street.

Re: Use that Combat Speeder!

I don't like the ME Speeder in surprise confrontations because I never know what way my gun is facing, when I switch to that position to find it facing backwards, I am distraught and then I find myself being filled with blaster-fire a split second later. This happens often because I wait for people to man the gun, then they immediately bail because it was too hard for them to steady the gun, they take fire, bail, I look back and bail too...

It's not worth it and people perform much better on foot as 2 targets than as one big target that takes 4 times as much damage. The only thing the MESpeeder is good for is set up defenses and open plains ATST hunting. Its a terrible APC and sucks in the city when you run into the enemy.

Re: Use that Combat Speeder!

I use it more on endor. Just hop on the side as a support and you can repair it during battle. problem is that people often  bail out when its a perfectly good fighting machine in open spaces.
