Planetside 2

Now that the Master Server is down, I thought I'd invite y'all to play Planetside 2 with BlackIntel and I this Sunday.

Planetside 2 is a free to play (and NOT pay2win) "MMOFPS". Servers support up to something like 1000 players at once per instance, spread out across 3 factions. You can get some really awesome fights when you end up in a 3 way battle over a base, I think Planetside has given me "OMG THIS IS AWESOME" moments more than any other game I've played.

It's like First Strike in that it's incredibly Teamplay oriented. If you don't work as a group you just won't win. A single person in a 100+ person fight isn't going to do much. Working as a squad though, if you play well you can really change the course of a battle. It's quite arcady too, it's quite nice to step away from the constant booming, screaming, swearing and blood spatters and stuff from the newer Battlefields.

For DUKE, one of the classes has a jetpack, unfortnately it doesn't have walkers, but it does have heavy-armoured infantry units which are strong and stuff, that may hit the spot for you. For the rest of us, the guns for the faction we play with feel a lot like FS guns - Fire a lot of bullets, generally inaccurate unless bursting while crouched.

It's a good game, it's available for free on Steam, although once it's downloaded make sure to launch it and run thru some more patches. Steam doesn't get all of the patches unfortuantely, it just updates to major versions and the launcher handles the rest.

If you want to play, I'll be on on Sunday from 8PM UK. I'm also considering doing some kind of introductary session on Friday at the same time. We'll see if people turn up. Once you're launcher, we play as the Terran Republic faction on the Miller server. Once you're on, find the social tab and add Gwynzer to your friends list.

Alternatively add me on Steam (Who doesn't have steam these days?), my name on it is Gwynzer. You can join BI teamspeak too for a chat at ts3.blackintel.org. Clicking that link should launch your TS to our server if it's installed. We have a few BI old faces who still play fairly regularly, and I know that there's a lot of people in this community who we'd love to get back in touch with <3

Star Trek: Axanar

Here's a link to the trailer for a Kickstarter movie project with visual effects by a good friend over at Scifi-Meshes, Tobias Richter, he does phenomenal photo-realistic Star Trek starship meshes, from classic TOS, through the movies, to the Next Generation and beyond (basically think of any Trek ship and he's probably built one), going so far as to even develop indie designers' vessel designs to the same high level of polish he dedicates to his replicas of official canon starships. His work has also featured in Blu-Ray remastered Next Gen series on occasion when they had to fall back on CGI due to not having the original opticals in good nick or whatever. Anyhow, you get the message, the guy is talented.

However this new indie Star Trek movie project he's working on is insane. First you've got the premise, which unlike a lot of indie Trek shows isn't simply a continuation of a favourite series or era, but breaks new ground by detailing the Federation Klingon War, taking place I guess somewhere between Enterprise and TOS. In addition to that they have given it a unique history documentary style with the key players detailing their roles in the conflict. Even from this short trailer it makes for intriguing stuff, I'll let you watch it now and judge for yourself...

http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/show … -to-Axanar

In addition to how cool the visual effects are (nice one Tobias ), and the cool concept for the show, you have this insane cast that are involved with it. I almost had a geekasm, Richard Hatch? Tony Todd? J.G. Herztler (Out of Klingon makeup for a change)? Gary Graham? Kate Vernon? Well from the look of this lot this show is not going to suffer the same weak link most indie/fan films do, that of substandard acting.

Keep your eye on this one, definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Hi everyone! First off let me say I think this is an excellent mod and quite professional in appearance and game play. I wanted to know though if there were any assets from this mod released, such as cockpit models for the fighters.

I ask because I am working with a few others to create a mod for Freespace 2 Open called Star Wars: The Original Trilogy. Here is teh website if anyone is interested: http://www.moddb.com/mods/star-wars-the … ilogy-mod.

Anyway I just wanted to see if such assets like cockpit models were available, if not then thanks anyway!

Disney Closes LucasArts?

Well that is an end of an era, and a seemingly mental move by Disney. Okay, so perhaps LucasArts haven't been at the top of their game for a while now, with some ropey Star Wars games lately like Star Wars Kinect and The Force Unleashed II. But this is still the legendary studio that brought us the classic point and click adventure games of the 90's such as Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, the classic Star Wars games series X-Wing, Dark Forces, and published great games such as Rogue Squadron, Star Wars: Battlefront and Knights of the Old Republic. They haven't been at their former greatness for a while now, but Star Wars: 1313 certainly looked like a step in the right direction. So what now for the future of that game? Tantalizingly close and then snatched from our grasp like Battlefront 3 from the looks of it. So we see another casualty of the merger to join the Clone Wars series (though we still don't know exactly what is going on with that to be fair).

So what are everyone else's thoughts on this? Mourning this loss of an iconic games developer and publisher? Or feeling pretty Meh about the whole affair?

Battlestar Galactica / Diaspora

I'm wondering what nobody has posted it yet

Diaspora Shattered Armistice has been released.
It's a free, fan made Space Shooter based on the improved Freespace 2 Engine.

Release 1 is full voice acted and features some nice rendered Intros / Cutscenes.
If you like the Starfighter Battles in First Strike, I strongly recommend to try it out.

What is Diaspora?

After four long years in the making we are proud to release Diaspora: Shattered Armistice. Diaspora is an episodic-release single and multiplayer space fighter combat game set in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica universe. Diaspora is a standalone freeware game based on the FreeSpace Open Engine, everything needed to play is in the download. The project is not-for-profit and not associated with NBC Universal or Bigpoint's Battlestar Galactica Online.

Our team opted for episodic releases, each involving short plots surrounding different Colonial or Cylon ships and characters. The first Release, Shattered Armistice, tells the story of the Battlestar Theseus and her crew during the attack on the colonies. Many ships seen in the show are part of the first release but some such as the Viper MK2 and the Battlestar Galactica are going to be seen in later releases where they are part of the main story.

Shattered Armistice has a fully-voice acted 8 mission campaign with an original score and cinematics. Several ships never before seen in the Battlestar Galactica universe such as the Sobek class battlestar and Assault Vipers make an appearance.

If there is continued fan interest and support, future episodic releases will see ships such as Pegasus and Galactica from the show. The fact is that almost all the music in the game or trailers has been original. So for that reason, we're also releasing the soundtrack. You can find details on it here.

Has been a long time coming but my on-line portfolio:

www.haroldwithers.co.uk

(I know, imaginative title yes? ; P ) gets a much overdue update. I hadn't updated it for over 4 years which is just criminal. My copy of Dreamweaver went the way of the Dodo which kinda scuppered any efforts to update it, but getting a new copy recently gave me the chance to do a bit of a clear out and spruce up, and now she's ready to set sail on the interwebs again with stacks of brand new content.

The site now features a games work specific section featuring all of my officially released game titles, which is now bang up to date with such releases as Sonic & Sega All-stars Racing and Virtua Tennis 2009. There is also a new gameography page within the about me section, and plenty of new work to check out in the miscellaneous 3d and 2d sections. And of course there is a section dedicated to the mod First Strike which features plenty of behind the scenes work in progress images and in game screenshots.

Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think.

Regards,

TALON

OK, not quite. BlackIntel is currently looking for a clan logo, something that we've never really gotten around to. We have started a competition for the design, which includes prizes. We are offering free FTP space on our server box, and also (depending on if possible) a game server. If I like the design, I'll also get it printed onto my body. Putting a permanent mark on Gwynzer... I imagine there's a few people here who wouldn't mind that, although I imagine they'd prefer scars, not art.

You can see more information, including entry and prize details at the BlackIntel forums Here. The thread says that entries have to be PMed to me, if you don't want to register to the BI forums, you can PM me here and I'll enter the design.
