I am using Origin with no probs.  I have tested it with all known work arounds for the master account server:

- by disabling the internet
- with the Deathlok clan fix

Here is a new one that disables the master account server login:

Try deleting the cache.  Use the generic cache.

If all else fails, delete and re-install.

For some reason the FS exe that was installed already was 8,223 KB. Have I used the wrong installer (FirstStrike_v1.5 [1,367,128 KB])?

I just tried the new executable you linked but it did the same thing after launch(which is black screen then back to desktop without an error message).

The launcher version is 1.6.6.0

EDIT: ok, got past the no cd thing but the game crashes right away. Can't try the widescreen fix which Twigs mentioned as the installer doesn't support that any more.

I also tried activating the mod from the menu in vanilla 2142, same crash happens.

It should be said that I used the Deathklok fix to play vanilla 2142 online.

Look for PnkBstrA and PnKBstrB, make sure they have admin rights and firewall access. Also try a manual punkbuster update.

As for the rebel defiance link, try rebeldefiance.clanteam.com then go to the forums using the link.

Also one last problem that is punk buster specific. After a while of playing ANY PB protected game my whole desktop locks up and a hard reset is in order... smurf PB

You can sign up as either Imperial or Rebel, or just turn up on the night and play without having to stick to one side. Kicks off around 8pm Uk time.

To find servers running First Strike, first click on First Strike servers tab from the multiplayer menu. Ensure all buttons along the bottom are unchecked except for same version and same mod. Click update, the menu should now populate with all servers running First Strike.

Only the rebel defiance server is up and running at the moment though, I believe it is running multiplayer for the campaign, but I can switch it over to co-op so you can play against some bots and earn some stat points.

Ok, what version did you patch 2142 up to? The mod is geared to work with patch 1.51.

May also be worth checking your resolution:

A common problem reported is a crash to desktop when first starting First Strike. This ismost often reported by users running widescreen resolutions. In order to allow First Strike to run widescreen, and show widescreen resolution options in game, we have included the ability to enable it from the First Strike launcher.

Open the launcher but do not hit deploy.
Click on file then preferences.
In the small windows is a field titled Arguments, in this field you can enter ANY resolutionyou wish. To enable widescreen options simply enter: +widescreen 1

Click apply then ok.

You can also use this same field to enter any resolution not supported from the in game options. To do this, again find the arguments field as above. This time enter +szx **** +szy*** substituting the asterisks for your resolution, eg +szx 1920 +szy 1080
