For anyone that is moving to windows 10 or reinstalling Win 7 or 8 and wants to install BF2142 from disk, you will probably get an error when installing the patches, that a newer version already exists. I tried registry settings suggested online, but could find nothing that would allow the patch to run.

I have also heard that if you call Origin support with enough peristence you can convince them to set you up with the Origin version of BF2142. Even though it's no longer offered, it's still available as a download for players that had previous purchased it or upgraded a disk version to the digital download.

what finally worked to get the disk version updated in windows 10 was to copy my BF2142 game folder from another system. I can upload upload my folder if anyone needs it.
