Do you think it's possible for the torpedo to go straight ahead, then dive on the target, like the ones in A New Hope? I watched a Project Reality movie where an anti-tank missile was fired in the direction of an enemy tank and proceeded to make a detour detour up in the air before diving down on it.

I also don't know how powerful proton torpedoes really are. Since they're anti-capital ship weapons, I can imagine their explosive power and blast radius would be pretty high, so maybe it'd be overkill to employ them against small ground targets (think a big, 1000kg bunker buster against a T-65 ;) ). Maybe if an 'anti-tank' proton torpedo was made that carried a lighter load, that'd be a better idea?

I was going to type that air superiority means that you're the only one flying, not that you're not challenged from the ground, but apparently not:

Wikipedia wrote:

Air superiority is the dominance in the air power of one side's air forces over the other side's during a military campaign. It is defined in the NATO Glossary as "That degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another that permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea, and air forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force." One should note that in military speak, air superiority is different from air supremacy.

I stand corrected, then. Air surpremacy seems to be more accurate:

Wikipedia wrote:

Air supremacy is the most favorable state of control of the air. It is defined by NATO and the United States Department of Defense as "that degree of air superiority wherein the opposing air force is incapable of effective interference."

Which was the case of the entire Battle of Hoth.

Good idea, except that's not quite how it worked in Star Wars. There was no one painting the exhaust port with a laser beam on the Death Star.

I'm very curious to see if the developers make anything of this. It'd be quite fun to have in-game.

This might work on space maps as well.. A recon can get onto an enemy ship and can plant a beacon on it to make it an easier target for torpedoes to hit.

I had this idea for the late Warp mod. It featured an invisible small ship called a "Stealth Ship", which primary feature was its invisibility. Now, I suggested that this ship might have a laser beam with which to "paint" the cap ship it had sneaked up on. Then another class of cap ships would have heavy, long-range torpedoes that were usually unguided, but which could lock on to ships that had been "painted" with a laser beam.

This would allow for a stealth ship to sneak up on a big cruiser and paint it, for then to have the torpedo-carrying cap ship let loose a torpedo salvo from far, far away and blow the target to smithereens.

I don't think anything similar can be applied to Star Wars, but I felt like sharing it nonetheless.

So like on a Hoth map, an imp would have to get in close and setup a laser beacon on the power plant. Then you could target the beacon with the torpedoes from your ship.

The developers have stated that there won't be Imperial fighters on Hoth as they'll be doing their utmost to stick with Star Wars lore. It looks like the Rebels will be enjoying total air superiority, unlike in GC.

A target would be painted, and a F/A-117 would drop a laser guided missile and hit the target within a range.
