I agree with your last statement about apathy. Its a major problem. Tho' I believe its because , in the main, people know its all rigged.  This is worse than not being bothered to vote , imo.  These  people, who believe its rigged but are still apathetic , are the biggest problem.

The original Millitary Commisions Act was turned down. All they did was put different wrapping paper on it and it passed. Greasing the treads. Greasing the treads.

Bush has vetoed the total of 1 bill. Which I believe was the stem cell research one two years ago. Bush hasn't been trying to get round the Congress all that much anyway, its the Supreme Court that's his problem really, and getting around them is something that the Congress would find MUCH easier than the President.

At the end of the day apathy is the biggest problem in politics today - people by and large just don't care anymore who gets the nomination when they can hardly be bothered to even turn out for the main election.

With the recent fiasco involving FEMA and the Katrina disaster, I'd argue that what America needs is not smaller government - it needs accountability starting from the top of the political ladder.

It's very easy to ignore the world outside of the United States in a bluster of calls for returning to the nation of the founding fathers, but the US is part of a global economy in which financial institutions and governments have the power.  I do subscribe to the Milton Friedman school of economics, however, and agree that the Fed needs to be severely restricted.  During his tenure, Alan Greenspan had as much real influential power as the rest of the government combined - and that IS a problem.

McCain, who I used to like, or at least not despise, has faded over the last few months and now is about zero-chance a viable candidate.

Let's not even talk about John Edwards the ambulance chaser, who takes every opportunity to apologize for voting for the war.

That leaves Obama and Rudy, and I'm not a fan of Rudy's pandering to staunch conservatives while at the same time trying to pull in the middle voters.

At least Obama is fallible - there's a good article in Slate right now discussing his misadventures in investing and how he's rectified the situation. I disagree that a presidential candidate needs to be completely spotless and Godlike.  He just shouldn't be a hamsters damned idiot.

As far as Bandu's suggested man for the job - listen, in order to do some good in politics you have to go with the system.  There is absolutely no chance in hell a great grassroots candidate who is not "high profile" will win a party nomination, let alone a general election.

I'm sure there are tens or perhaps even a hundred odd presidential write-in candidates who are even genuinely better men, Bandu, but they are absolutely irrelevant.  It's a two party system and it takes big money to even think about running.

Much like the media , most will go along to get along.

While this is somewhat true, keep in mind that congress CAN overturn a presidential Veto. Corruption in the senate, however, is another story.
