I've tried it and it was hard to get into, but it's free so I'm not complaining.

GMax:
The much better choice. Think of it as a dumbed-down version of 3ds Max. AutoDesk has since stopped offering GMax since it has both 3ds Max and Maya under it's belt, but you can still find some websites that still have it for download.

9 should be the best but most of us use 8 I think, I just got 9 so I'm installing it in the weekend see what it's like, but 9 adds a whole host of new features so you'd bettter learn the old ones first

I personally prefer Maya, I hardly know squat about modelling in max, only unwrapping.

And yes, max = 3D Studio Max, the best version should be the latest, which is 9 I think. I think it's only a matter of personal prefernce which program you prefer. I started out with Maya and then had a look at Max. I believe that the program you learn first, is the program thats gonna stick with ya

But I use Max

If you want to start modelling you could check out the Lynda.com tutoarials, I learned it that way, they really start from the beginning (kinda annoying if you already messed around a bit you'll know half of what they tell you in tutorial 1 to 5 (out of about a 100)

Most of the team members use Max, although there are a few maya users, watch out for Bandu he is an XSI user. XSI modellers are like Firefox people they constantly bug you about how much better there software is until you finally give in and get it. Btw do you use Fire fox?
