Yeah, I agree the finale is that sequence's weak spot, but I don't mind the rest of it, I guess they kind of go at it like a wrestling tag team, when one gets knocked out or into trouble the other comes in to bail him out and continue the good fight.

I don't mind the laser gates, though they're obviously just a maguffin to service a need in the plot to seperate the two Jedi. The everyday purpose of them is to apparrently prevent arcing energy feedback from the plasma energy reactor core or something.

I also don't mind the way Maul defeats Qui-Gon, it's not about honour and besting a dueling foe in a fair fight, it's war. Not to mentiion the fact he's a Sith, since when have they been renowned for fighting fair? In my opinion Maul would use a cheap trick or any dirty means to defeat his foe.

In my opinion the best prequel duel is still Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul, I can watch that sequence till the cows come home

It's good, but is spoiled by quite a few things.

The gungan-droid battle and Anakin-in-a-fighter distract the viewer from the fight (on youtube you can see the whole fight in one scene and it works much better). Also, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon never work as a team, but instead fight individually. Qui-Gon consistently runs off without Obi-Wan to engage Maul instead of waiting. What's the rush, anyway? Maul isn't going to run until he's finished his job. Qui-Gon ends up dieing because of this.

And those laser shield things... ridiculous. What purpose do they serve in normal times? And then Qui-Gon's death. Instead of out-fighting him properly, Maul simply wacks him in the face with the hilt of his saber.

And then Maul's death. Hasn't he heard of the force? Obi-Wan is hanging by his fingertips, and Maul enver tries to dislodge him. Then he leaps up, where he is exposed in front of Maul for about 2 seconds, and Maul watches while obi cuts him in half. Ridiculous...

Yeah, the prequel battle action had a very much 'Wouldn't it be cool if we did this? Or how about if we tried that?' sort of feel about it because that's pretty much how most of the action sequences came about. Effects and previsualisation people knocking out a vast array of ideas for Mr. Lucas to pick and choose from like a buffet, or pick and mix at Woolworths . Which is good in a way because it allows the creatives to really give it their all and turn out some really cool and inventive stuff. The downside however is that it comes across feeling all patchy like a pick and mix, and the action doesn't progress the story forward as much as in the original trilogy because of this. Most things happened in the original trilogy for a reason, not just because they looked cool. Though of course most of it did look cool.

FSDev| Bandu wrote:

I also think the original lightsaber dueling and jedi themselves were better . It makes the jedi and the force more mysterious and magical than the over the top choreographed fighting in the prequels.

It certainly came across as more graceful and elegant in the original movies, but the lightsaber duel in ANH doesn't even compare on any level with the prequel scraps, or even with the ones in the latter two original trilogy movies. Though I have to admit no lightsaber duel has been as powerful and emotionally gripping as the Luke vs Vader in TESB. And the only one that could have, the Anakin Obi-Wan duel, just didn't cut it. It's like they were desperately trying to beat TESB's duel, and though technically superior I just found it wanting in the end. I guess it had just been bigged up so much as this was essentially the pivotal point of the saga as a whole, and the major reason for even making the prequels was to get to this point. It just wasn't powerful enough (though it came damned close), and was trying too hard. In my opinion the best prequel duel is still Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul, I can watch that sequence till the cows come home, with Yoda's lightsaber action a close second (you can't help but smile whenever the little green dude whips out his weapon).

Ooh err, that came out wrong.

C'mon are you telling me the battle for Geonosis didn't blow you away? And you've gotta admit the lightsaber action in the prequels is technically far superior to that of the original trilogy, though they make up for that with the emotion behind the duels in the original.

I think in general the technical limitations that they had to deal with in the original trilogy forced them to be more creative to pull off the effects that they wanted within the budget, this resulted in much tighter and better concieved sequences in my opinion. The Star Destroyer thundering over you head at the opening of ANH, the Death Star space battles, Hoth, the asteroid chase. All these sequences more than hold their own today, and a lot of this has to do with a stronger narrative flow.

A problem with a lot of the prequel battle scenes was that you just sort of wander through the action and stuff just happens to be going on around you. Ep3 was much like this and this is why its a good movie.

Eps 1 and 2 were like 1h10m of ,to be frank, boring crap then some action.

The best scene out of all 6 movies was without doubt the Battle of Hoth. The only really great scene from the prequels , imo was the battle between Yoda and Sidious. That was done superbly , from the cowboy-esque taunts to the flying Senate Pods. I also liked the pod racing in ep1 ..but it kinda felt out of place.

The originals just flowed. The prequels seemed a bunch of set pieces randomly stuck together and "look at these GFX..theyre great ant they?" type stuff.

As for the space action. The originals win there aswell. The beginning of Ep3 was good, it looked great but I wouldnt really call it an action sequence ..apart from the tiny bit with the Buzz Droids..Anakin and Obi Wan seemed like they were cruising lol .
In ep4 you were in the cockpit with Luke etc and in ep6 with Lando. I mean, come on, the Millenium Falcon flying into the Deathstar ,whilst being chased by TIE fighters vs some cartoonish type Buzz Droids ? no contest.

Id say , dont confuse nice GFX for action.

Everything about the originals is better ..down to such things as ship design.
