It causes Han to resent Anakin, and then when Anakin dies, Solo resents the fact that he resented Anakin, and so it throws everything into some sort of pyschological mess.

It is sad but imo nessisary, the heroes all ways survived to fight another day while ensign ricky, private bill and ten-thousand generic storm troopers got butchered. By killing a main character it brung the story line closer to home and revitalised the fear of battle.

That being said I don't consider the novels past the yuzagan vong (or what ever they are called) invasion as Lore, chewie was the first of many things to change in the SW universe. But believe me the post GCW novels consider no-one safe.
