At the time she was pulled out of the command centre, I dont think it was a matter of coordinating any defense anymore. Plus I think you you underestimate the rebels as a group... It wasnt a matter of fighting to the last man with a bunch of ragtags that run away at the first sight of trouble. They had multiple gallofree transports inside the base that needed to get clear before evacuating. Chances are high the general cought one of the last ones to leave, or maybe even the last that Leia and Han couldnt go to.

Maybe it seems odd looking to the line 'captain goes down with the ship' or maybe 'commander takes the fall'.
But we're talking about a bunch of rebels, who are volunteers and don't get paid. Besides I wouldn't know what other title Leia has besides princess but maybe at that point it was just a major, captain or not to forget maybe just a soldier.
Leia could have voluntered for the job to stay as last, because the risks to be captured 'alive' would be high because of the bloccade.
When imps would gain the general well that could pretty much suck.

I got the impression that everyone had fled, and that only Leia and a skeleton crew was left. She was really stubborn, with her 'fight to the last man' attitude, and Han pretty much had to drag her out of the command centre. So I assume he'd fled earlier. Seems odd, as you say, but I think that's it.

I haven't read the movie novels and the EU is so big it wouldn't suprise me if I missed this: When han goes back to the command center during the battle to make sure that Leia got out, where is General Rekiean? (Sp?) Shouldn't Rekiean be directing the defense instead of Leia?
