hi there...I too am having this problem. I found this post that acknowledges a problem with Vista and how it uses memory.....involves downloading c++ visual studio express, installing it, going to Tools within that app, going to Dos from there and running a specific command. If you want to try it, here goes. I applied it but have not yet confirmed if it really works.
I reads as follows:
I will try to remember what I did :-
After downloading and installing Visual C++, I went to Start, All programs, scrolled down to find Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition, Visual Studio Tools, Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt. Then I applied the fix.

The path to the BF2142.Exe file on my system was :-
cd c:\Program Files (x86) Press Enter
cd Electronic Arts Press Enter
cd Battlefield 2142 Press Enter
Then type in,
editbin.exe /LARGEADDRESSAWARE BF2142.exe Press Enter
Should come up with a Microsoft copyright or trademark thingy. This means success.
I think at some stage I was asked to update the program, which I downloaded and applied. But I think it was actually after the above fix that I applied the update.
Hope this helps, I had another totally crash free BF2142 day yesterday so it thas definitely cured my problem, good luck.
________________________________________
Last edited by raydun : 04-25-2007 at 06:24 AM.

I am having the same problem, it doesn't do it on BF2142, just on First Strike, I click the "deploy" button and the screen flashes a few times and takes me back to the desktop.

What I am running:
XP SP2 updated with mod for DX10
intel E6600 w/ asus mobo
8800 GTS OC
2 Gig memory
Sata II 250 GB hard drive
500 watt power supply

My guess is that it is a software conflict somewhere but I cannot find it. I would love to be able to play this game so if anybody figures it out PLEASE tell us!

EDIT:

I have tried this with BF version 1 , 1.1 something and 1.25, with the updated punkbuster. also trying version 1.0 and 1.1 of First Strike on each.

Might seem an obvious question, but have you tried reinstalling the game?

Sometimes things just go corrupt on a computer, with no real explanation. The answer is usually just to uninstall, make sure the folders are actually gone, reinstall, update to v1.25, and update PunkBuster.

BTW-- this is forum meant for FirstStrike related discussions. You're having a common Battlefield 2142 problem, and in the future, things like this should be posted at the official 2142 forums:
http://forums.easports.com/mboards/cate … egoryID=70

After I tried one of the numerous punkbuster fixes for battlefield 2142 (this one /might/ have worked)
I went to start up 2142 for a singleplayer match as I hadn't played it in ages, and the second it went to load up and go to black screen, it crashed back to my desktop. I've tried just about every fix for this, and none of them have worked.
