Oh, and to elaborate on ion cannons in FS, they do two things: They make it harder for capital ships to fire on you, and they make it harder for fighters to evade you. A tactic I love to employ with the TIE Bomber, if I actually get behind an enemy fighter, is to cripple it with the ion cannon and then blast it with lasers while it can't evade.

the missiles in vanilla work, because you have the countermeasures and the lock-warning, in FS it would be (or is ) pretty hard to evade missiles that lock onto you

We did some experimentation with this and it just wasnt effective. Most likely due to the size of the maps, the speed of the fighters, and the poor collision detection in the engine. It works in vanilla (sort of) because of the slow flight speed of the gunship and transport.

It works well enough land to air though

In SW lore they did actually use proton torpedoes against other fighters. As for tips on how to get better at dogfighting, see this article for starters if you haven't already.

My #1 tip is to hold your fire when you spot an enemy. If you can, sneak up behind him, then line him up in your sights, and then fire when you've got a good shot. If the enemy doesn't notice you, he won't dodge or fire back.

Dogfighting is monotone and pointless in the beginning, but when you've played for a while, it starts to get really great.

As for giving missiles to A-Wings, I'm not a developer, but I personally don't see it happening unless the thing is faced with a superior opponent, like the TIE Avenger or something. As it stands, the swift little bugger is more than deadly enough as she is. And while lasers quite clearly aimed for you in the movies, as is visible in several scenes, they won't in FS as it would, in my opinion, take too much skill out of the space combat.

lol....yeah I guess I will just have to practice for hours.

Yes, pretty much. Dogfighting is an experience thing, you get gradually better at it the more you play. Just watch out for people who are really good at it (I generally try to be somewhere else when Saupadl is around ).

Sure. I use the mouse at very long range to shoot precisely. I use my joystick in closer engagements.

You don't get scanners like X-wing alliance, but every enemy in front of you should get bracketed and you can follow them.

You won't get your targeting computer making firing solutions for you, so you'll have to use leading fire and try figure it out for yourself.

If you're unsure of a shot- its best to undershoot and shoot behind him than in front. Shooting in front of him will just let him know you're on to him, where as if your shots go behind, you can sweep them forward onto him.

And its a lot easier taking someone out from behind!

Hope that helps.

Torpedoes are heavy artillery. They don't lock on. Ion cannons DISABLE the ships without damaging them, for capture, or to make them easier to hit. Y-Wings carry more ordinance, but X-Wings still have torpedoes for heavier targets. For the blasters, there is not an auto-aim, so you have to hit the enemy the old fashioned way.

And remember...this isn't 2142.
