Yes Athlon.. not state of the art, but will probably still be able to run most games for the next 3-5 years.
At least that was the case with my last build. P4 2.8, Asus p4p800e deluxe, Nvidia 6800gt.
Still runs alot of games, including Bf2142, at about medium quality settings.. Even played crysis, at a whopping 10fps. not bad for a 5 year old rig.
I allways look to GPU, and Memory.. to upgrade first.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131074
Striker does 2 way Sli
Oddb@ll and myself both bought 8800gt cards and he came around my house and we tried Sli on an old Asus K8n32 mobo I had. I think I recall we where using the 169.19 driver on a Vista OS. The results where a little disappointing (around 10% increase on 3DMark06) The drivers have got better and also so has Vista since then so maybe It might be worth considering, but it wasn't back then

As you say Slimshiesty, anything we buy will be out of date, or rather not state of the art as I prefer to think of it, in around 6/12 months. So my advice still stands that if your gonna upgrade buy a graphics card first. Throw it into your old system and if not blown away by the perfomance increase (in games) continue to upgrade the rest. You have nothing to loose really

like i said , no matter.. there both trash within the year.
Intel Nehalen processor... 6 and 10 core processors within 10-12 months.
were both left with recyclable materials.
I still prefer the EVGA step up program.. buy a card today.. upgrade to the newest greatest in 3 months.. and pay a small percentage of it. Motherboards too for that matter.
The akimbo cooler option for the 8800gt is a nice option.. dual slot cooler that expels air outside the case.
My comp still has excellent temps for air cooling.. with cpu load temps rarely exceeding 35c, and gpu averaging about 55c under load.. its rated to 90c to begin with .. so temps are not a problem.

Pay less now.. and have money to build a new one later when prices on ddr3 stuff comes down.
and then save money there too.
Just cause you have the money doesnt mean it cant be wisely spent.

Part 3
Core 2 and quad cores love bandwith. 1333 memory delivers it buckets which cancels out the need for lower latencies
Part 4
8800gt expells it air into the case, the 8800gts doesn't (which suited me, i did have a 8800gt but swopped it) Hows the overclock gonna run in the hot summer months? Its already a pretty hot running card stock
Part 5
you know how to overclock as do I doesn't mean everyone does or could even be bothered
Part 6
Future proof yourself. The new mobos and processors want 1333/1600 memory to run as intended. Buy your 4 gig of DDR2 with DDR2 mobo now and throw it in the bin come next year/ upgrade

No offence taken, "speed is a matter of money, how fast can you afford" Seems to sum most things in life up
PS Gainward have been making cards for years and their "Golden Samples" are some of the best money can buy

DDR3 mem is overpriced right now.. give it time to come down.
I suggest many places online to shop.
Most will have some kind of shipping special..free 3 day shipping, some places give you an amount off if paired with other items.. like Tiger motherboard/cpu combos. those can save you anywhere from 20-100 bucks.

If your power supply is not more than 3-4 years old, is a good quality brand (antec,PCPaC)
is 450watts and has an 18v rail.. you will be ok to use that.
Definately research what you want, price per performance is the question.
