1. Go to c:program files\Eletronic Arts\Battlefield 2142 make sure you have your folders set to show hidden files, look for a folder named radial.cdb

2. rename that folder by right clicking and hitting rename, I just put an O in front of the original name but you can do what you want.

3. If for some reason you cant find this file check your folder options ( this happened to me the first time I looked and I also did a search and I still coulndnt find it) make sure its set to show hidden files. You will then have to close that folder and start over, just go back to step one. Im sort of anal so I restarted also but I dont think you have to.

4. Go play FS after your done. I tried a bunch of servers and they all worked. If you go back and look after you have joined a server the folder will have been recreated and you should see the one you renamed.

maps that have lots of surface textures ( yavin ) or lots of white ( rhen var) with lots of snowy white things moving around, use more electricity at the circuit level.
Endor is Texture heavy with all the tree canopy and flying goodies everywhere.
Space map ( besides yavin or hoth ) will use the least, and produce less heat. Electrical cunsumption = heat .

well , testing has many approaches as the test equipment can vary.
the cheapest initial test equipment is reach in and grab the heat sink while its been on for a while.
If you smell meat cooking sorta like bacon in the morning, its hot. ( burning smell, smoke rising, sizzling sounds count also )
The sink should have heat saturation that wont feel really hot. You should be able to hold onto part of it without feeling too hot.
Dust and slow fan is common cause of why stock setups go bad.

Clean the heat sink of dust , BUT DONT BLOW THE FAN WITH AIR PRESSURE EVER and make it spin with the dentists drill sound. I know its fun but it destroys the plastic bearing surface inside the fan and dooms you shortly later.
If you have made the dentists drill sound with your fan already , replace it , lol.
Yes they can turn , but they get slow and they look strong but are 50% capacity sometimes and just suck at half speed.

On the bench testing front, I just open the case and air the thing out good, get all the ribbon cables away from the GPU, etc. It will run cooler and you can see if theres improvement.

But look, if youve Barbequed your graphics card already, we arent going to bring those dead transistors back from the dead... So the next best thing is to have a test card available.

If you have $$ and have access to a heat scope, just scope the cards heatsink and make sure the whole sink is nearly the same temp. If its showing hotspots, theres a cooling problem.

If you have a tri-corder, you can- ...

Duly noted, Skyraper. However, I wonder what it is about either Endor Strike Team or RV Ice Plains that causes my machine to freeze up. Lately, its been the second of my two occurrences; each time that the game freezes, my monitor blacks out.

I'm willing to test your theory, Skyraper, that it's the card overheating. How do I go about testing an Nvidia card on that front?

I started having the issue where about 3 minute intervals of good gameplay and then freeze. But I started waiting and sure enough 30 seconds into the freeze the sound locks and loops in very short cycles ( like .5 sec ) then after 30 seconds of this, it frees up and runs another few minutes before repeating. I was also getting weird texture problems now and then that I hadnt seen before.
Before outright replacement, I solved the issue by cooling the GPU better. I think the game just heats up graphics cards if you run them rich, and like an engine, you must either cool it or throttle back. I think the issue is from too many cheap pie cards being sold and poor installation environments and they just fritz out after a while. Dont tell me you dont buy cheap pie cards because when you shop by price, yer gonna get some cheap pie something. I do it, I look at the price and decide ultimately, so im not a cheap pie but a cheap pie skimmer, bordering on frugality.

So, I dig this mod, in case you guys haven't already figured out. But unfortunately, I have some stability problems with it. Particularly on the Ice Plains and Endor Strike Team maps, but it's happened on every map at least once.

At any odd point during the game, one of two things will happen.

1. My game will freeze outright, sound will loop, only broken through hard reboot.

2. My game will freeze outright, sound will loop, AND my monitor shuts off (maybe the graphics card borks out?). Again, only broken through hard reboot.

I'm using a SSC GeForce 9600 GT with standard overclock, and it doesn't usually give me hell in most of my games. I'm also running XP.
