Make a note of the server IP number then open the DOS command prompt. For XP users it's Start - Run - type 'cmd' and press Enter, and it's also in the Control Panel.

In the window type 'tracert' followed by a space then the IP number, then press Enter. It will show you the maximum, minimum and mean ping for each hop to the server, so at least you'll know where the problem is occurring.

If you're getting high ping to all servers, the problem is probably with your ISP. I had a similar problem with Virgin.net in the UK (>200ms ping most of the time), and the only way to solve it was to switch my ISP (to BT Internet for anyone else with the same problem).

Run a virus scan, followed by a spyware scan. If you don't have anything to run these then I reccomend AVG antivirus (free)
Spybot (free)
AdAware (free)

Run them all one at a time and see what gets thrown up and treat as neccessary. Turn off all unneeded programs (ICQ, MSN, IRC you get the idea), and then try again. If its still not working then check your internet speed using one of the many available online tests and see if everything is as it should be. If there is a problem with your speed check with your ISP in case they have throttled your bandwidth due to excessive downloads, or going over your monthly limit if using a capped service.

Ar you playing over wireless? Try plugging directly into the router, that often helps with online gaming.
Have more than one phone socket in the house? Try setting up in a different port, maybe theres a fault in that line.

Love the mod.
Since I downloaded the 1.2 patch (and the hotfix) I haven't been able to play due to excessive lag, and I seem to be the only one affected by it on server, meaning that the problem is probably on my end.
