Then make this place advantageous for the commander... Turrets/Doors, where he can be protected etc... See BF2 : the commander is half the time near his equipements. If you give him a bunker where he can protect an important flag, which is protected against arty etc... The commander will be there.

I know everyone likes different things about a game like BF2, so I'd hate to totally kill the whole commander thing by making him so easily locatable. Combining the first idea in this thread with the most recent one, what if certain spawn points held the artillery, other held the UAV trailer, and others held the Satellite. It would make capturing a certain control point worth something, because then your commander could use the capabilities that point provides. Even though it would still be easy to locate a commander you just make sure that defending the commander is worth something, maybe points.

This way, you don't take away a reason that a large group of people play, you just change the tactics and capabilities a little so they have to adjust. Maybe this would even be just a separate gamemode, allowing servers to run both ways (vanilla commander mode and FS commander mode).

Just some thoughts I wanted to throw in there (and by no means does this mean any of this will happen, this isn't a news release).

Right, but it would be way easier to find the commander if there were only one spot on the maps to command from. Maybe it would be better if there were one main command center for each side on each map, but at each spawn point there would be a mini-version (data uplink), but you could only call down artillery strikes from the mini command consoles. This way, if the main base is taken, the commander doesn't lose all of his advantages, unless the other team does destroy/disable the artillery.

Also, this idea might give spec ops guys a new function. Instead of just blowing stuff up, they could have the mission of assasinating the enemy commander.

On a side note, is there any way to give the commander a longer respawn time?

Arch angels suggestion is possible, but would look odd if only certain areas would be destructable.

that sounds a little beyond the engine. But none of the less I have an idea for that (:D). I think I suggested something similar for battle damage on capital ships. Picture a map like hoth, with alot open ground, and trenches and stuff. Well you guys have undoubtedly seen the destructable fences in bf2 right? Well when the map is made, the mapper could included shell holes sparadically placed around the map. Then a destructable object could be created that looks like the top of the ground. It would only be destroyable by really big blasts, like ATAT fire, or artillery. So once the thing gets destroyed (it could have a neat little destruction animation of dirt flying everywhere) the shell hole is openly visable. Viola, semi destructable terrian.
Also similar things could be done to city areas, like coroscant, but in walls, and bridges.

If the artillery, radar and controlvehicle could only be repaired by engineers, instead of being able to do it, just by dropping a supply crate on it. It would also make the defending of the main base more important. Also the spec-ops missions would be more worth it, if you are able to damage the enemy communicatons and operations, for a longer amount of time. It´s a bit boring to see the radar back, just right after you took it out. I like the idea of enhancing the value of tactical & strategic gameplay. I´m sure it´s an area that has many possibilities, for implementing very original ideas to the game.

Hmmmm, this would be interesting! I know what you're talking about, when no one cares that the enemy took the flag that has your Artillery, UAV, and Scan. This would definitly fix that problem. Soldnder: Secret Wars did this, the Commander had a little computer.
