when a ribbon cable creates a problem by disconnect, not all conductors in the plug or ribbon are disconnected at 1st. Unless its a total disconnect from a massive bump or something, the video will still light the back light, and provide several signals for partial video... resulting in lines , discoloration , anything and everything except normal operation. Once that pronged connector unseats, its degenerative at that point. In the case of some moron working on your laptop that hasnt the requisite level of experience , they misrout the ribbon cable thru the hinge, resulting in degenerative failure of the conductor traces them selves thru abrasion.

Hold it up to the light and see if you can see a display, if you can then backlight has gone. If not...then try the cable connection.

You can rule out the graphics card/driver by connecting it up to an external monitor and seeing if it outputs a display.

Unless its some whacked out wonky operating system stuff,
Sounds like Its most likely the VGA ribbon cable that snakes from the mainboard to the lid , via the lid hinge.
What happens on 90% of laptops that do this after a bump( and it dont have to be a big bump )
is the VGA plug unseats from the main board. Never seen it do the opposite yet.
You have to remove the top garnish and keyboard usually to get to this plug. Once I snap them back down, and its working, I use some CA contact cement (just a speck) to seal it in place or it will do it again, and again, and again... If they just did this, and no glue, its happened again.

Most - 80% have the VGA plug facing upwards right above the keyboard.
60% of those , it slightly to the left of center , above keyboard.
So, you can press firmly on the garnish where I speak of, enough to flex the plastic a millimeter, and half of these come back on, although sometimes only if you hold pressure there. ultimately it will have to come apart again.
