Monitor your server CPU usage at peak times, particularly on Ryloth and Yavin, to see how it's coping with the load. Renegade found that the RT server was overloaded with 32 players; hence the starfighters warping across the screen on Yavin, and hence the switch back to 24 slots. Even with just 24 players, the RT server maxes out on Yavin and Ryloth, so we still get lag spikes. A more powerful server is the only answer to this...

True, but one of the problems we've had has been the fact that there is only one server populated, that makes the mod look unpopular and can quite easily lead to a mod losing a fanbase as people just see one server and think, 'Well it can't be that good then.' The more populated servers we have the better, it makes the community look like it is growing (which it is by the way), and gives players the most important thing which is choice.

Another thing to note is that currently First Strike doesn't seem to handle really heavily populated servers that well at the moment. Anything over 30+ players, particularly in a space map like Battle of Yavin or a vehicle heavy map like Ryloth and (for me at least) the game has a tendancy to grind to a halt when the lasers start flying. I've found that around 20+ people in a server provides me with the best games, it doesn't get too laggy and there are still enough people to have epic battles.

That said, if the server ran smooth for me with nearly 60 players in there? I would jump at the chance to have a scrap on that scale, but I just don't think the game/server/or my machine performs well enough to achieve that.

It was rather dull. I didn't feel like playing much with so few players and overall played a bit over an hour. With both servers combined we could've got to 30+ players.

SamZi wrote:

I suggest we start playing on our server (64 slots) mainly in the weekend instead of RogueTribe (24 slots) as there will be more players but probably not enough to fill 2 servers. We might even consider turning off FF if the RT'ers can't stand it. Take into account that all the clan games will be played with FF on (if there would be any!)

I disagree. Keep things just as they are.

As Imperial pointed out, both DS and RT servers were well populated last night. I believe that's because we both stuck to our respective servers to get them populated. We've known for some time that there are sufficient regular players out there to populate multiple servers, but many of them appear to reluctant to join a server that's not already populated. We gave them a choice of 2 servers up and running last night, and they took both choices. That's nothing but good news!

I like playing with SamZi, Gwynzer and the rest of the DS crew, but I'm happy to forgo to pleasure if it means we end up with more players overall. There are other advantages, too; Samzi won't be able to steal my kills and gold stars if we're on different servers!
