Try turning down your Graphics settings and see if that boosts performance.

Also on MP no servers appear on any of the lists

Please click the "First Strike Servers tab" and set your filters to the same as the ones in the screenshot below:

Did you download the latest version of FS, 1.4? If so, when you go to the Online tab, go to "First Strike Servers" and from there uncheck all the filters except "Same mod" and "Same version only".
There isn't much players online, usually people play at later hours, like 22:00 GMT. And remember to join us in the next Community Game which is in Saturday.
