If Bioware can nail the story driven MMO side of things I'm sure I can overlook the somewhat questionable art direction and the fact much of the design work is more prequel centred than KOTOR centred. With at least another year to go until release I can't say much more on it other than to say that it'd be foolish to write off Bioware.

Slyfox_Elite wrote:

OldBoy wrote:

Did you watch those Timeline trailers?

I did watch it a couple days ago and it seems as if they want to kill him off. I honestly hope that they'll explain it somehow by saying that all the records of what happened in the unknown regions and back were erased or something. I strongly disagree with the "It is thought that Revan never came back" stuff that Bioware is saying.

I just read an Interview with the writing director Daniel Erickson.
Here a "small" cutout about exactly the issue you mentioned:

The Old Republic takes place about 300 years after KOTOR. Will the game explain what happened to Revan after KOTOR 1 concluded? And what about KOTOR 2, which you didn’t actually develop? Is that game even a part of the canon for you guys?

Absolutely. We get the KOTOR 2 question a lot. The thing with KOTOR 2 is that it was a very Jedi-specific plot. The Jedi were very much ravaged by it, and we talk about that in the timeline – trying to rebuild the Jedi. But it was not as large a galactic piece. So there are a lot of factions and things that aren’t actually affected by it. Also, we’d always worked in the fact that Revan and Malik were, in fact, involved with the Sith emperor himself, and it’s really why we touch back on KOTOR a lot.

There are going to be a great deal of questions answered from KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 in our game.

Very cool. Ever since I played those games, I’ve been like “What happened? I want to know! I liked that guy. He was me kind of!”

[laughs] That’s the interesting one. People saw the timeline that just came out, and for the first time, we sort of started to hint at what Revan looks like. And, obviously, a lot of people have the attachment [to their in-game characters]. Lucas had long ago decided that there is a canon concept of both Revan and of [KOTOR 2 main character] The Exile. And so that one’s hard for people who haven’t really been in the know as much, because there’s still people who are like “No! Revan was bad! And a girl! And The Exile was a guy!” But they are both light side in the canon. Revan is a guy. The Exile is a girl. That’s actually Lucas canon.

I didn’t actually know The Exile was a girl. Well, that makes my playthrough deeply confusing.

[laughs] So you’ve got the “Crying Game” twist.

So is there a chance that Revan and The Exile are still alive? It’s been a long time, sure, but they’re both Jedi masters. Don’t old Jedi masters just turn into shriveled green people – ala Yoda?

Definitely not giving out any spoilers, but we are gonna take care of all those questions.

Full interview: http://www.vg247.com/2010/06/19/intervi … ore-102797

So, who knows
I wouldn't judge it too soon.

Flippy Warbear wrote:

Seriously, give me old school Galactic Civil War MMO or shooter for once. Where have gone the days of SotE, Jedi Knight and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter...

Well...there was Star Wars Galaxies, but then Sony Online Entertainment got a hold of it...

Anyway, the Old Republic trailer was interesting, but being an MMO, I find it a bit questionable regarding whether or not they can actually get that kind of pacing together, or if it'll just be the regular back and fourth attacks with a special bit every now and then. It also looks like it's trying to go the Force Unleashed route with the force powers.

Force Unleashed 2 is looking good, and all I can hope is that they make some various improvements on the first game: First, I hope they can rely a bit less on Quick Time Events. The finishing moves were neat, but it would be much better if you actually had the ability to do that yourself. Second, I hope they can make more use of the DMM and Euphoria technologies. I really loved watching the early videos where they demonstrated what was possible with them, but in-game it didn't really come up often. Sure, you would occasionally go into a room where there was some breakable glass or some bendable metal pillars, and you could see the enemies dive out of the way every now and then, but generally, you wouldn't really see the effects very often. Most of the environment was composed of static bits like canyons and metal walls, without any clutter or equipment that would take damage throughout a fight and be essentially wrecked when you were finished. As for Euphoria, to actually get enemies to do anything other than dive, you would have to practically rub them up against railings, other enemies, or objects to get any effect.

...but frankly, that has nothing to do with the trailers. I thought they were both pretty neat.

Some were never trained for war. Luke for example. The only lessons he had were those with the dying Yoda... But I know what you mean and I agree. Seems like they only care about the action
Well, that's what a cinematic trailer is about anyway.

Slyfox_Elite wrote:

I would like to see a Sith lord whos face is not destroyed in some way.

The funny thing is that the sith in the second movie (Hope) is the same as in the first one (Decieved). In 'Hope' that emp grenade or whatever it was bruised his face so he had to wear a mask in 'Decieved', which played after 'Hope' :-P

Additionally I'm sure you'll be able to play a Sith without a mask.
So make your own hero ^^

Slyfox_Elite wrote:

I guess the main reason I'm mad about this is because they completely abandoned the KotOR 1 and 2 storyline.

Did you watch those Timeline trailers?

http://swtor.com/info/holonet/timeline

The last one (it goes backwards) is about Revan and Malak. So they haven't completely abandoned it. I'm sure he will play a role. The story was too good to be just left aside. And I'm sure they know that better than we do^^

I'm not so into MMO's but since you can play it as if it was a singleplayer RPG with a Co-op mode I'm definately interested
And maybe that will get me interested in the other MMO's aspects like raids, PvP, crafting and whatnot.

I saw the second SWTOR trailer when it came out, it was cool, but by the end, I was really annoyed. I mean, that armor is basically ripped of from the clone armor. It resembles the clone armor far more then the Stormtrooper armor does. AND that leader dude looks like Jango/Boba. Very similar. Then, we get this Bastila Shan look-alike who battles against this Sith dude, and the two end up to be far more powerful than Yoda and Palpatine!

In the first trailer, there was some stuff that annoyed me too. The Vader/Malak look-alike... Find something new, honestly, I would like to see a Sith lord whos face is not destroyed in some way. Plus, those starships are too similar to the Star Destroyers. In KotOR one and two, we could see similarities, but they weren't exact copies of the movies. The SWTOR ones are.

I guess the main reason I'm mad about this is because they completely abandoned the KotOR 1 and 2 storyline. Revan, the exile and their buddies should be back, but now it looks like Bioware is going to kill Revan off just for the sake of this MMO. KotOR 3 was in pre-development, but it got canceled. Go read about it.

I'll admit, SWTOR DOES look nice, but they are making a new storyline while destroying a great one that hasn't had an ending.

I want the KotOR characters to be back, and they can't leave Revan in the unknown regions forever, no Star Wars story ends like that.

Have to disagree regarding The Old Republic trailer, I thought it captured the feel of an ancient Star Wars universe very well, and it definitely felt like Star Wars to me, the action beats and camera editing and mood nailed it for me. Obviously there are a few things that are off, such as having highly visible effects for powers such as Force Push etc, but these are elements and visual cues from the game, so obviously those are going to be in there and throw you off a little, but then this is a trailer for that game. Other than those elements I think it kicked arse. It will not make me any more likely to buy the game (played Knights of the Old Republic and loved it, but don't have the time or inclination to dedicate to a MMORPG), but as a piece of entertainment in and of itself? Very watchable. Each to his or her own.

With The Force Unleashed they've definitely made the lead character just too powerful, and it comes across that way very much in the trailer, as it sucks the drama out of every scene because there is just no tension, but I have to say it does work quite well in the game and it is all kinds of fun smashing the game ennvironment and enemies to bits with the Force.

Trailers looked pretty cool. But I'm always a bit afraid that they make star wars it bit too much like dragon ball Z. That dual bladed lightsabre jedi was doing something that looked a bit too much like a kamehameha to me.

I played a bit of star wars galaxies (a galactic civil war MMORPG), and it was quite fun. I stopped (before the space expansion was released) because I found myself grinding too much. The thing I noticed there was that I didn't really like the jedis walking around. I felt that in that era there shouldn't be too many jedis.

I think that the old republic time period lends itself much better for that.

For me both periods give me a star wars feeling, although I prefer the galactic civil war time.

One of the things I love in the galactic civil war period is that a lot of things are a bit old. Like when you see the cockpit of an x-wing, everything is shaking a bit and wires are hanging around.

I've never played TFU, only seen some gameplay videos of a guy walking through a level and swinging wookies from left to right, with an occasional force push if there were too many of em. Didn't look too attracting.

@ The Old Republic

What the hell was I watching? It was like a dirty crossbreed between SW (somehow, I have no slightest idea which bit) and LOTR. I had absolutely no feeling of Star Wars in it, good thing they had blasters, lightsabers and the original music in it to remind me it was actually supposed to be a trailer of a Star Wars game. I know Im the only one on the island of dislike with this but I cant see how this title is any relevant to Star Wars. I never liked KOTOR series either, since I couldnt immerse myself into the universe in which I thought I was going to be in since it had the SW opening sequence, but it wasnt what I got after all.

Seriously, give me old school Galactic Civil War MMO or shooter for once. Where have gone the days of SotE, Jedi Knight and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter...

@ The Force Unleashed 2

Now when I just started to steam out about not having my good ol' cannonfodder, the stormtroopers, gaining any attention for a good while, here comes a title that reminds me of the good ol' days of Dark Forces and Jedi Knight series. Altho I've got no idea whats the story behind this one since I never played first T.F.U to start with. And while I deeply appreciate that theres actually a Galactic Civil War title coming out again, I just dont get too excited about this guy (presumably protagonist?) saying "Vader cant stop me now". What, is the outcome of the upcoming battle going to be something else than this fella getting his pie handed to himself by the Lord of the Sith?

I dunno, TFU2 seemed nice, but then again like The Old Republic trailer it didnt show the game itself. It only showed a cinematic movie about some dual saber wielding "dude" slashing stormtroopers and some droid that reminded me of Acklay. But, if I have to choose between these two titles, I'd definitely follow TFU2.
