Thanks for the responses and suggestions. The wiki is great and I did have to refer to it initially but anytime I hit a snag I didnt have the time or interest to alt-tab out and find and open the wiki. Immediacy is what I'm after and I suspect other people are as well. It's probably difficult for you guys to put yourselves in the shoes of a newbie but I remember being completely confused and frustrated at times when I first started playing no matter how obvious it all seems now.

I still think there's a good argument for ingame help to cover the basics, especially for highlighting the differences in gameplay between the mod and vanilla BF2/BF2142. It's these differences that make playing the game worthwhile for me and I cant help but feel that a lot of people are missing out on some of these aspects.

But, if no one else agrees then I guess it's just me...and I can live with that too

I dont have a second monitor and like to play fullscreen so windowed mode wouldnt work for me but it might work well for others.

The FS Wiki is meant to be a collaborative effort, and so I encourage everyone who finds an article lacking to contribute by adding details. The new maps and vehicles need fact boxes and screen shots, for one thing .

Much of the older stuff is covered by detailed articles, though, so you may want to play FS in windowed mode and refer to the Wiki when you feel the need. It may not sound like the best way to play if you're used to fullscreen, but give it a try. Personally, I play as many games as I can in windowed mode, because it lets me jump to other tasks (as well as take notes with Notepad during testing) during in-game "downtime". As a temporary learning method, it should work.

There is also the FS Wiki, http://firststrikemod.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page.
Although it might need some work with some of the newer stuff from the patch and more detailed description for things like maps and such.

Hi, I really like the mod and appreciate the fact that the FS Dev team have given us a great (free!) battlefield game but I have one suggestion that perhaps you could take into consideration.

Maybe I'm a total idiot but I often have trouble remembering the order in which to capture the points and sometimes I forget what all the guns, gadgets and vehicles are capable of. This was especially annoying when I first started playing and couldnt understand why I couldnt take off from the ground in an x-wing or couldnt capture certain points. It almost put me off the game completely to be honest.

So perhaps there could be map-specific, soldier specific and vehicle specific help that a player could access from the console or even better for newbies, from the ingame chat in order to highlight the key points.

Such as: hold down s to take off (vehicles), this map needs point x to be captured before point y(map specific), only officers have spawn beacons (soldier - officer) etc)

I dont anything about how to implement this but I imagine it could be done from scripts running on each server. I reckon it might keep some of the more impatient newbies from giving up on the mod too early. Thanks for the great game!
