It is risky only because a less skilled player may jump in the pilot seat and kill everyone involved.
I despise the people that steal my shuttles once I've already flown them somewhere...especially when they don't even know how to fly them.

You don't have to. Just map it to your secondary key choice, instead of overwriting the primary.

Its just a matter of getting the two ticks on the throttle indicator to line up so that its not on repulsors or thrusters. Of course, doing that quickly takes a bit of practice, often requiring a bit of a slide, maybe even a slight arc, to slow the aircraft, after which you have to jump out of the pilot's seat to turn off the engines entirely.
I'm basically speaking from the perspective of a shuttle pilot, however; I recall landing Y-Wings and speeders being a fair bit easier, especially considering you don't have to be careful about leaving the wings half-deployed.
Anywho, something I would greatly appreciate would be a 'shut down' button, not unlike the one found in the Mechwarrior series. That way, you could just get reasonably close to the ground, then shut off the engines without jumping out and endangering yourself. Now, as usual, I haven't the slightest idea of whether or not this can be done on the engine, but it would be wonderful nonetheless. 
If you've ever watched the First Strike Jundland video, you may have noticed a lambda do a fast combat landing on the sandcrawler. All done by joystick I promise, for I was that pilot.]]>I much prefer a Joystick to Mouse/Keyboard when flying.
What he said. The only issue I have is that flying with a joystick makes landing a bit tricky, what with our fancy VTOL capabilities, but aside from that everything's solid.
