The gameplay trailer is so awesome, but what it shows is pretty much nothing like what the gameplay was actually like. I went into the beta with very low expectations and not even they were met, I can't believe uninspired the game felt on pretty much every level. Out of all Star Wars games I've ever played I think they've got the most boring and badly designed interpretation of Hoth that I've ever seen. Because it's Star Wars though, and has the Battlefront name, it's going to do amazing. I can't help but think that if DICE came out with this game and it didn't have "Star Wars" in the name, it'd be getting completely slammed. Or it'd end up being a Titanfall/Evolve which seems super interesting and then dies out within a couple of months. The map design throughout the beta felt bland and completely uninspired. Tbh since DICE started working with Frostbite I don't think their map design guys have been on point much at all. BF3 had some okay maps but the best ones were the interpretations of the BF2 maps. BF4 was just horrible in overall map design, they nailed fighting around flags but the spaces between them were awful.
It's a shame cause there are a few small things they could do to make the game a lot better. Playing in first person mode (like that epic trailer) is such a small thing but does a lot to change the way the game feels. Movement and shooting feels a lot different. Yes, you can toggle it ingame but you're at a considerable disadvantage if you play in 1p instead of 3p as with 3p you can see around corners and have more in view. I also like what they are trying to do with the class-less system but I feel that it's completely removed any depth to the game. That + the constant pickups for all of the interesting things on the map.
Early on DICE said that server owners would be able to do things like force first person on their servers and stuff. Unfortunately they've later came out and said there will be no servers (in the traditional sense), so we're stuck with matchmaking style joining and no customisation of gameplay settings. Doesn't seem fun, certainly not long term.
I've held off on preordering this time, I'm not willing to pay for full priced DICE game + the cost for the season pass again(dice ofc said there will be "No Premium" for Battlefront. Renaming it to Season Pass doesn't count guys... come on). Once the price drops and the DLCs are out then it might be worth picking up.
I'd usually be happy to blame EA, however Bioware is also EA and the changes and additions they've made to Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO the past month have been amazingly awesome. DICE Sweden has just gotten worse and worse over the past 5 years, they are nothing at all like the company that they used to be - and to be fair even back then they made some pretty awful calls. Amazingly, as soon as they transferred development of Battlefield 4 over to DICE LA we started to see some of that old company back, they've been awesome to the BF4 crowd since taking control.
