Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I saw the footage and all my fears were initially squashed. The game's art assets are absolutely spot on(having personally spent what feels like a decade studying SW weapons, vehicles, locations, and characters). They have set the bar high in that respect and it is awesome. The sound is phenomenal, the effects are super authentic, and it is pure Star Wars in its presentation.

However. More details have come out which really kill it for me. One such detail is that, on the walker assault gamemode anyway, the only way to fly a fighter craft is to locate a floating glowy icon somewhere on the map and when walked over, your character crouches down and calls for air support. You are then teleported into an already airborne fighter. This bothers me for a few reasons:

1. This means there is no teamwork in terms of repairing aircraft. There was mention you could get repair powerups which will probably be like flying through a glowy spinning icon somewhere in the sky to repair your craft.
2. The feel of physically jumping into a fighter and carefully taking off(or landing for that matter) is huge for immersion and cool-factor.
3. It simply is not realisitic. We want to live out scenes directly from the movie like seeing the Snowspeeders taking off from Echo Base, gunners in the back, ready for action. How this feature affects any possible future space boarding maps I don't know but it would be odd for them to allow take off and landing for one game mode and not for the other(though I could see a case like FS has where you spawn directly in a ship and cant leave it until you die).

Another thing that bothers me is there doesn't seem to be any player to player healing mechanic. No bacta cannisters and no revive(not sure on the revive part). So we have no healing and no repairs. We also know the guns do not have ammo per se and are based on heat. This leads one to believe there will be no ammo drops either. They also decided not to add a spotting feature and it seems any and all players/vehicles always show up on the minimap so there will be little room for stealthy attacks.

There has also been word that heavy weapons such as torpedo launchers will only be powerups found in the map. This is why they went with withering fire as nobody would be able to damage the armored walkers if they didn't happen to find a rocket spawn.

Deciding not to implement squads and instead going with the buddy system further kills any teamwork in my opinion. I fear it will always feel like a bit of a free for all. Teamwork is what I love about this style of game and with no player to player support mechanics in the game I'm quite dissapointed. I wouldnt be surprised if vehicles only have one player slot when they can clearly support multiple players from a lore and gameplay perspective. Right now with all we know about the game it appears like it will be very limited. One of the things I've grown to love about BF4 is the wide variety of gadgets and weaponry available. A friend of the devs told us they were having a hard time trying to come up with an unlock system as they are kind of stuck with the lore. My bet is there wont be a progressive unlock system in the game beyond small perks you get in a match.

I'm gonna try really hard to enjoy the game but I fear it may just not be for me in the end. I'd say we can mod it into what we want but DICE dropped modding due to all of the licensed technologies that Frostbite uses(or so they say).

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I agree. Matches could very well to turn into a running of the masses as a result - chaos amongst the team rather than chaos of war. No designated roles. No hierarchy. No incentives for teamwork.

I'm very upset with DICE's decision to implement a COD perks-style system to gain access to vehicles (I can understand this for hero characters, but not vehicles), and it appears multi-man operated vehicles like the AT-ST (which is suppose to require a crew of 2) is operated by a single player and only after completing a specific set of requirements (x amount of kills, points earned, etc.). Of course, with the AT-AT, you're only granted control of it's weapons, and only for a limited amount of time. With this perk system, I'm afraid there's no take-off/landing for aircraft either since there wouldn't be a point.

Then there's the Y-Wings... which you can't even fly (at least, not in Walker Assault Mode). You can only call them in as AI air strikes via designated uplink stations scattered across the maps.

Matches are supplemented with bots, which is great, but even so, 40 players is too few. I say the more players, the better. AI is great and all, but it's never as good as playing with/against humans.

I don't know. I'm so frustrated with this situation.

On one hand:
*game assets are extremely authentic
*hero characters; force/lightsaber combat
*1st & 3rd person perspective
*cockpits
*graphics are simply breathtaking
*animations & framerate are very fluid
*sfx are accurate
*some of the gameplay looks like it's genuinely a lot of fun
*melee confirmed
*Survivor Mode solo/co-op against bots
*character customization

On the other hand:
*vehicles are only accessible via a perk-style system
*nothing's been said or shown about including prone and vehicle free-look
*maps are not fully destructible
*Survivor Mode evidently only allows you to play as Rebels against AI Imperials and not vice-versa
*AT-ATs are on-rails and mostly AI controlled
*starfighter controls look extremely simplified
*no squad & class systems
*no Prequel Trilogy/Clone Wars era
*no space battles
*no mention of whether or not we'll be able to play all game modes solo/co-op with bots

Some of these things could already be in the game and just might not have been revealed yet, some can be added as DLC, but some are fundamental issues with the core game design that can't be changed without a major overhaul.

DICE keeps talking about how we'll finally be able to live out our Star Wars fantasies, but as more information about the game is released, we're finding a lot of limitations on how and what we can do. There's not much freedom. I mean, how am I suppose to live out my Star Wars fantasies if I can't even pilot a freak'n Y-Wing and personally blast the living hell out of an AT-AT?

Oh, I also noticed this:

Dear Lord... did they really add warheads to TIE Fighters?

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

It's a shame they'll never do it as good as you peeps already did. Fail.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I have other news for you:
It seems like this uploinkstations are here to get an y-wing attack run on the AT-AT´s. The AT-AT´s can only get shot with the snow-speeders cable if it got hit by the bomb from the y-wing.

Watch at 3:05
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXU5k4U8x20
After the time was over for the imperial to capture vack the uplinkstation, the y-wing came and first after the y-wing hits with the bomb, the icon for the cable cam in the snow-speeder, when it passed the AT-AT.
(The first time in the video, then the snow-speeder passed the AT-AT there wasn´t this icon shown)

I really hope, they wont give the Tie-figters rockets..... there are so many settings they could have used to get this ballanced:
The Tie-Fighter has better Lasers (only 2 but they do more damage + the mounting under the cockpit of the Tie makes it mutch better for dogfights) and better turning then an X-wing.
Therefore the X-wing has better armor.

Damnit DICE should listen to TALON.
I won´t have a problem with it, if they wont add any space-battles to the new Battlefront. Since it is going to be pretty arcadish anyway. I would better wait for an new X-wing vs. Tie-fighter for Space-Combat
(But i don´t think, that this it going to happen anyway, atleast not with some small simulator-additions. Propably only completly arcade nonesence)
There is no way, to tell this Star-Wars game studios how to make games? big_smile

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

Jeez, if they've added missiles to TIEs to balance things out, the laziest canon breaking solution that anyone could come up with, that could be a deal breaker for me. Heck First Strike managed to balance things without resorting to such cheap measures. We showed it could be done while keeping within the established lore. TIEs lighter armour countered with speed and manoeuvrability, while the X-Wing is slower and less manoeuvrable. And DICE even saw it, so they have no excuse.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

It seems like this new "battlefront" will be a combination of battlefront, battlefield, COD and first strike, and it's not looking good (except for the first strike part smile ) I hated the COD perk system I stopped playing in part because of that, one person got lucky or had played the game for 100 hours more than the rest of the players on, they could turn it so that the other team couldn't do anything positive for a short time. Which doesn't feel right in a battle.

It looks very impressive, but after playing First Strike and battlefield games for so long, I wouldn't mind if they made it more like First strike or the later battlefield games than the other battlefront games.

They seem to have cut out a lot of the teamwork roles, healing, repair, revive. Those are some of my favorite roles in First Strike and the battlefield games! I suppose we won't know until it comes out, but if it's true it'll be a disappointment.

No space battles is upsetting, while I was never very good at it, it always looked amazing in first strike, and the fighter controls always felt very realistic. Why would they intentionally add something like missile to TIE fighters? and then add those to Hoth, HOTH! Which never had any such fighter battles.

But we'll see when it comes out, hopefully our fears will be unjustified

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

What worries me the most is that EA/DICE will follow the familiar formula.

1.  Release the game
2.  Release pay for content that you have to buy to keep up with your friends every few months for about 18-24 months.
3.  Try to milk as much extra money as they can from players with bonuses and extras.
4.  Drop the game after 3-5 years when interest starts to wain because of the lack of new content.

This leaves players hanging after investing several hundred over the past few years.
