Well, here's my idea then:
You have an extra bar in the HUD for sheilds. Each hit detracts from that bar and once it's depleted then the actual health of the target is depleated.
Now something abit more complicated: if you want to add power divertion, let the power available be in it's own bar, create a button for it and when you press it, it replenishes the shields, BUT it's only good for one time.

Now continuing on my first idea, the shields, in my opinoin, should not be able to regenerate like sprint untill you land in a hanger (even more detailed, a spicifc part of the hanger) and repair. And as the ship is repairing, the shield bar fills up!
