Quoted from the Quakenet forums FAQ:
""One security issue that QuakeNet has worked to solve is the revealing of your IP address. Traditionally your hostname would be that of the computer from which you are connecting. QuakeNet have, however, introduced a new user mode to hide your IP (with a .users.quakenet.org host name).
All you need to do to hide your IP is to auth with Q, and then set user mode +x: /MSG Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH <username> <password>, and then /MODE <your nickname> +x.
We highly recommend that you use this facility to hide your real IP, and for maximum security you should auth with Q and set this mode before joining ANY channels. ""

In other words your perform would look like this:
/msg Q@cserve.quakenet.org auth BigBadChewyUsername ChewyPassword
/mode BigBadChewyUsername +x
/join #first-strike
After that you should be perfectly safe on IRC
