Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

Everyone assumes closing the S-foils = more speed.

remember the movie quotes?

lock S-foils in Attack position (immediatly people assume this makes you go slower. but lets not forget the other Quote)

"accelerate to attack speed"  Accelerate being a term generaly meaning Speed up. tongue

whos to say S-foils in a closed position means you slow down to a cruising level. i mean the ship itself STARTS with it's wings closed.

Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

Wow...I need to to watch the movies again...It's also in Star Wars: Empire at War...which is a RTS for those who don't know, but you could lock s-foils on x-wings, and get 'increased engine power in turn for reduced attack damage' or something like that...I always liked that idea though...

Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

Opening the wings allows more surface area to vent heat from the engines, also spacing out the engines, so I would assume that it would allow the engines to go faster without overheating and also manuver better. If we assume that the wide engine placement of open S-foils makes the engines too cold (which would simply be stupid) then yes, maybe closed S-foils would allow more heat and power to the engines.

Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

Atmospherically, it makes sense to have a slight increase in speed when the S-Foils are closed due to less drag. It's such a minor detail though, I doubt anyone would care. And I always hated having to open and close the strike foils in the Rogue Squadron Games. Just looked stupid. Oh, and ANH does make it sound like the proton torpedoes are retardedly inaccurate, but that can possibly be chalked up to the Rebel's position at the time. If they only had two squadrons of snubfighters attacking a battlestation, it's reasonable to assume they wouldn't have had top-of-the-line torpedoes, either.

Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

If there's a difference in performance from s-foils opening and closing in atmosphere, I say it should be pilot-controlled. Faster flight when s-foils are open, more agility and perhaps stability when they're open. As long as it doesn't lead to people opening and closing them 1000 times during battle, as that'd just look silly. Perhaps there could be a delay from s-foils reaching 'open' position to lasers coming online to counteract frequent opening and closing of them, but that sounds slightly silly, too.

Re: X-Wing and Torpedos

Bottom line is that Closed S-Foils go faster... I may not have proof but in Star Wars Galaxies which is meant to be a realistic star wars experience. Closing the S-Foils on the X-Wing made it go faster and you were able to add boosters. I had the fastest fully functional 100% reversed engineered parts (Torpedoes Boosters and all parts needed) Adv. X-Wing in the Gorath galaxy. With a top speed W/O boosters was 1869 speed (Wings Closed) open was about 200 less I think. Don't remember the exact speed... Anyway in galaxies the speed was increased when the S-Foils were closed. Same with the B-Wing. Didn't seem to apply for the ETA Actis or the ARC-170.

Bottom line is we get to decide that, not Star Wars Galaxies tongue  Preacher also pointed out evidence straight from the movies so that stands higher than a cash cow invented by Sony wink
