The "laser" you see is just like the in real life tracers. The weapons in starwars shoot a exploding gas and the light is just a tracer.

yeah was gonna say aint the weapons gas baed or somthing.. well at least thats what i can remember from the old pen and paper game i used to play...

According to (I think) Vector Prime (or SotE) the "laser" you can see is just a residual side effect from the ionised tibanna gas escaping from the barrel of the weapon.

Hence the super duper expensive stealth assasin rifles that filter out that gas (1000 credits per shot, 10 shots n you can buy Lukes speeder, new tongue)

Reminds me of that stand-up comedian in Columbine (yes, I did watch it, sue me) who talked about how shootings would go down if they implemented 'bullet control' instead of gun control and had every little bullet cost a fortune.
