Re: Background music while playing
Strange. In BF1942/GC it used to be doable by converting an mp3 into BIK format and just tweaking the configuration files for the maps a bit. I had thought DICE would have made it even easier to add custom music to maps, rather than scratch the feature completely. Again, I'm not asking for a feature to be added to FS here. I'm just asking if anyone knows if it can be done by some simple client-side tweaking. Searching on general BF2/BF2142 forums has so far turned up nada, so it seems its either not possible (unlike in BF1942) or noone among the player base seems to know how it is done. Flippy Warbear wrote:Why cant you just have a winamp, windows media player or any music suitable program and listen through them?
It's not the same thing. A winamp player in the background can never select its tracks and musical mood based on the situation in-game, like which map is currently playing. You can't play out the battle of hoth while having your mp3 player pump out a space battle theme - it simply ruins the genuinity of the Star Wars feeling. I did this tweak myself for old Galactic Conquest for BF1942, adding some selected themes from the Star Wars soundtrack (legitimely owned, of course) to all the GC maps. Despite what many of you others may think, I think the ambient music did lots to improve the atmosphere and mood of playing. Changing the music that plays at the in-game menus is the easiest thing in the world.. just put a suitably encoded OGG file in the right folder. I can't for the world imagine why DICE haven't made it as easy to add music to a map as a client-side tweak, much less why they would make such a conceptually simple feature - that actually was possible in BF1942 - impossible. Here's a discussion thread on the Galactic Conquest forums about the very same feature in the old Galactic Conquest for BF1942, including instructions on how it was done.

Re: Background music while playing
I just got an idea. Even if there is no built-in support in BF2142 to assign an OGG to a map to be played as ambient background music, it seems like it would be the easiest thing in the world for the FSDev team to fix... If I understand you correctly, Bloedig Vader, an ambient sound effect in the form of an OGG file can be added to a map, and will then continously play in the background everywhere on the map (assuming the file exists on the client computer, of course). In fact, this is used in the mod in every single map to provide ambient background sound effects. Open sound_client.zip in your mods\firststrike folder and check out the ogg files in the ambience subfolder, for an example. All the dev team would have to do is add a completely silent OGG file for each map named <mapname>_music.ogg, and have it so this file is played continuously in the background as an ambient sound effect in the map in question. This should have no effect whatsoever on the gameplay or functionality of the mod (assuming it would not have a negative impact on performance), but it would give the players the option to go inside this zip file and replace this silent default music file with one of their own choosing. Seriously, could it get much easier? Please tell me you will consider this.

If I understood you correctly it sound a bit too hard concidering the options you have now (for example players). And personally for example Endor map, I couldn't think of getting that background out. It would ruin the mood completely. My opinion is that it (once again) is just perfect the way it is. And another reason is that I want to keep the background AND be able to add music on that. That way it stays "realistic".

Yes, this seems correct. I'm not sure what the impact would be on lag/playability. It would make it so a person could go in and edit files to play a song as you discribe, but you would also be changing the mod files and not sure what, if any impact that would have on things like punkbuster. It would also most likely cause many headaches for the Devs, as they would have to keep replying to post about "how do I put a song in again?", or "what is the steps for adding such and such song to my map?", etc. What you should do is try to figure out how to get the BF2Editor working with FS and make a map. Then test the idea out. (I will test on my end if you get a map working).

You misunderstand me. I am not suggesting that the ambient sound effects for any map be removed. In fact, for most players there would be no noticeable difference at all. The only difference is that if you wanted to you could add an ambient musical soundtrack to each map (without removing the ambient sound effects, of course). Actually, this would not require the modification of any mod files save for the replacement of the <mapname>_music.ogg file in the zip archive, since each map would be preconfigured by the dev team to look for this music file (which by default is just silent). So there should be no problem with punkbuster unless PB actually does a checksum check of the OGG music files client-side and compares them to the default set. That this would pose a major headache to the developers seems a bit of an overstatement to me. All anyone need to do is include a tiny section about it in the manual, or as a sticky post in the forum, and there should be no problem. Why do you want me to try to implement it myself when there are people on the team much more experienced with using the editor (which is not even designed to be used with BF2142) than I am? Testing if this would work would be a pretty trivial task to the developers (not to mention unnecessary, since ambient SFX in OGG format is already tried and tested), whereas it would take me a significant amount of time to even familiarize myself with the BF2 editor, and in particular how it can be used with BF2142.

Re: Background music while playing
we can easily implement music into a map (the basic way as in just playing in teh background without being triggered by certain events) however the issue boils down to thus. if we add it to teh map no one has a choice wether they want to hear teh music or not, EVERYONE must listen to teh music including those that hate teh music. I don't think you will see/hear constant in-game music unless we can find a way to make it an option. we will be looking at it for R2/R3

Um, yeah..... Read the forums and all the trivial, simplistic, overly discussed items people ask about all the time. Assume 10% of the players will know what to do but, no matter how simple the operation, 90% will either ask about how to do something or will be upset about the fact they don't understand what to do. Not to mention that even with a manual right in front of peoples faces, few actually take the time to read them, let alone understand them. For a couple reasons. First, cause then you can tell the rest of us the steps for getting the editor to work with First Strike. Second, cause it was your idea and you could speed the process of testing the idea yourself.
