I had this exact same problem - uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help, but what eventually worked was:
Uninstall first strike.
Restart
Install First Strike 1.0
Restart
Install patch.

I too have the same problem. Installer hangs on Patch 27 of 38 about 3/4 of the way through. It says not responding in task manager and I have to end task. Also tried from scratch uninstalling First Strike altogether. Tried the patch from both sources will try that above now where you restart etc.

I`m using Windows XP X64.

If all those having problems can post up their OS, we'd like to see if theres a pattern in these crashing reports. Seems to be people using XP Pro/X64 are having problems.

This problem happened to me and I was able to resolve it.  Clean install your FirstStrike, then open the task manager and make sure no programs that could be interrupting the installer are running (especially BF2cc and BF2142, but antivirus as well).  Even if you dont think BF2142 is running, sometimes it hides on you.
