They are blasters. Something like super heated gas or whatever. Totally different from conventional guns, get over your real world familiarities.
Star Wars = Different = First Strike
Get it?
Have you not noticed that these weapons were designed this way in the movies? They have SCOPES.
They where not "designed" for anything but looking cool. Hans pistols even has the scope mounted backwards
I did actually look at the technology for the guns, and they uses magnetic coils along the barrel to accelerate the plasma. So the comparison is still valid: Longer barrels = more accuracy and power. Greater mass = more stability.
And let me once again quote wookiepedia on blaster pistols:
Pistols were firearms used as sidearms or backup weapons. A pistol would tend to have less firepower than its rifle or carbine cousins. Blaster pistols could be seen just about everywhere in the Galaxy. A pistol may have been the one of the most common weapons, but was usually not the weapon of choice, mainly due to its short range and lack of power
Sure you can find a few l337 uber guns in the hands of the heroes, but as for the common soldier:
Normally, a soldier's favorite place for his pistol was in its holster. But in emergency situations, it could mean the difference between life, death, or worse.
So it seems Star Wars != Different AND Star Wars != First Strike
