Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

The most successful mod has got to be DC for 1942, and it bucks the trend described earlier in this thread (though maybe the author only meant to apply that to BF2/2142 mods). In any case, I'll tell you why I don't play this mod much, but I'm REALLY looking foward to new maps.

First, let me say that I ONLY bought 2142 to play this mod. I've never played vanilla 2142 and probably never will. I LOVED GC on 1942, and Pirates, and IS82, and of course DC. But all those mods had maps that were, I dunno...more fun than the maps offered up by FS. Don't get me wrong, FS looks GREAT. The weapons are cool, the vehicles are good. And I love just looking around the maps, but the game is just...dare I say boring? I've honestly been yearning for the old GC maps lately, as a direct result of playing this mod.

I'm no gaming expert, so I can't say, "Oh, you need more of that, and more of this". I'm just a casual player, but after all was said and done and the eye candy wore off, it just wasn't much fun to play. I'm sorry I can't give you more constructive critcism, but there it is.

I also acknowledge that this is a first release, and honestly, it's not fair to judge a mod based on R1. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with, both in terms of new maps and fixing the existing maps.

PS. the only "ask" I will throw out is this: the slavish attachment to realism and "why would the rebs do that, with this, etc." only results in fun for the hardcore gamer. Most people don't care about that crap (of course, it ain't their mod, now is it?), and just want to play with the cool toys. So, more cool toys, and less worry about whether this would have really taken place at this particular point in time that never existed with these people that aren't real in this fantasy world that's completely made up to begin with. It's not Star Trek, it's Star Wars. No one else cares.

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

Sometimes it feels that people wanted realistic game with Star Wars vehicles and armor and other stuff. Everything else should be the same for them. They want guns to be very accurate, they want the same kits etc... But imo that would suck big time. Problem is that only SW fans seem to like the game as it is. Others seem to want something else. This is only my observation, and I hope I'm wrong.

You raise an excellent point.  Some of the folks I talked to before FS were saying, as I was, "I hope it isn't just BF2142 with Star Wars skins.".  As it turns out, it most certainly is NOT a skinned BF2142.  However, some of the complaints I hear from those same folk are right in line with what your saying...which of course basically translates to "Hey, why can't this just be BF2142 with Star Wars skins?".

D'oh!

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

I actually was disappointed by the action feel at first, too, but I came straight from Project Reality, so what should I expect smile . I'm accustomed now, and love the mod.

Actually, there's quite a few people who aren't SW fans playing the mod, which is interesting.

you know waht I think it is? That new patch that came out for BF2142...maybe people ARE trying to play the mod...but they cant because the mod is compatible to the new patch!

Actually possible. They go, 'hmm, this looks good, what patch does it need... damned, 1.25, I just downloaded that beta patch and Tampa Highway... sigh, not going to reinstall BF2142 just for this mod, let's see what happens in the future'. Quite possible, and would explain a great, great deal. And if this is the case, we don't really have a problem at all - all the developers have to do is wait for the beta patch to 'go gold' and then have Release 2 work with the new patch.

Having said that, I think perhaps a 'what do you like/dislike' survey could be in order hmm ?

I believe that's inaccurate. Though of course the majority of the players will be SW fans, it's an SW mod.

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

I think it's early days yet, and there's not been much publicity about FS so far. I remember first finding out about GC when it was splashed all over Gamespy's landing page, and a few Gamer mags gave it a mention, which is why I first went out to buy BF1942, which had already been around longer than BF2142 has.  But I've seen no publicity about FS, and I can't even remember how I first found out about it (probably from another GC player, as I used to LIVE in that mod!).

Mind you, GC was pre-Battlefront, and even though I think the Battlefront games are a hideous, botched attempt to convert BF for the console market, created by people who know very little about the SW universe and previous SW games (oh man don't get me started), lots of people seem to like them (based on it's sales figures, that is, as I've never actually met anyone that likes them!), and so perhaps aren't interested in a fan-built mod.

I think FS has still got to build some momentum. New maps (especially more vehicle based ones) and fixes will definitely help that.

Keep the faith :-)

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

Ignoring the fact the mod is in desperate need of more maps (yeah we all know it), I think there is one big factor that is global for all mods really:

ITS SO BLOODY LATE!!! The work done is stellar and it takes alot of time to make mods, especially when its by people with lives... But the popularity of the primary game is failing. BF2142 is a year old: The first release of FS should have been out long ago.

I do miss the days modding was all about getting crap versions out ASAP to draw attention. Public alpha testing, not secrecy and teasers. The first DC versions where all about pulling in potential players for the future. They released something within a couple of months of BF1942 release (with the infamous backflipping helicopter and German-Iraqi soldiers on BF1942 maps) and kept building on it.
