Re: Call me an anal grognard, but...

I think its fair to say that X-wing's center of mass is way too far forward, and looks really messed up when you pilot from 3rd person view.

Uh, if the rear end of the x-wing is heavier than the front (which seems to be true in FS), that means the rear has more momentum potential than the front. Thus the present physics settings in FS. So I think they are correct now.

i think hes saying that the front end of the x-wing seems to be heavier than the rear and he thinks the center of mass is to far forward.

Is anyone else here bothered slightly by the fact that the vehicles and starfighters in FS don't seem to accurate centers of mass?
Two prime examples are the speeder bikes and X-Wings. Both of them seem to have a center of mass somewhere in the skinny part of the vehicle, instead of further back where the pilot and, most of all, the engines are located.
The fix for this probably as simply as shifting the model around in whatever 3D modelling program was used to make it (3dsmax right?) though I wouldn't having no experience 2142 modding.

You are very satisfyingly right, for someone who is posting in the public forums and not the dev forums big_smile

If you open the X-Wing model in the editor, you will find the centrepoint of the vehicle more past the cockpit than in the "core" of the fuselage back between the R2 unit and the engines.

I don't know if there are plans to change this, but it gives me a lot of hope knowing someone noticed this....

EDIT: Yeah I agree with SafeKeeper.  As far as I know, the centrepoint of the vehicle is where it pivots, making it a very important factor in the modeling and export.

Re: Call me an anal grognard, but...

Hehehe, I love being right, but one question, would you have to shift the point that the laser blasts come from in the code? Or would this be done in 3DSmax?

btw you should update your sig as it points to the old site big_smile

Re: Call me an anal grognard, but...

^ I dunno, the speeder bikes look pretty much like they do in the original trilogy. I think they're good as is.

The center-of-gravity issue is noticeable in certain situations, but I really don't think it's game-breaking. It's just a little...awkward at first.

Re: Call me an anal grognard, but...

i think the speeder is ok. but the fighters look a bit weird when they are turning.
