Also you have the additional factor that a Starfighter's main Ion Drive is supposed to be quite toxic, hence the use of Repulsorlifts on take off. They only engage their main drives at altitude, and don't really let rip until they hit space. But then you also have the issue of why Starfighters were not used on Hoth?

T-16 and V-wings both have ion drives as main propulsion tongue

As for the Hoth arguement, I believe that both the X-Wing and Y-Wing faced great difficulty operating in Hoth's atmosphere due to a number of reasons, the biggest of course being the harsh cold.

That'd be a hard argument to make considering how cold space is when not in the direct surrounding area of a star.

True, but these are much lower powered Ion Drives than those used for spaceflight, so I guess their emmisions are lower too.

tongue

Besides, I didn't say Ion Drives were not used at all in atmospheres, just that ships use Repulsorlifts for take off and engage their Ion Drives at altitude.

Yes but Hoth also has a certain amount of humidity which could cause vents and such to freeze up. This humidity would not be present in space.

That said I don't think its ever said that they couldn't use the X-Wings on Hoth, although we all know the line about adapting the airspeeders to the cold. I personally think the reason they didn't use X-Wings was A) Lucas wanted to show us a cool new vehicle, and B) there would have been a shortage of fighters after the Battle of Yavin

Re: Starfighters on Ground Maps

Starfighters don't vent anything into space as far as I'm aware.  If they did, it would be just as likely to freeze as I'm sure the life support system generates some humidity in the cabin or the pilots would be extremely uncomfortable.. so really, there are no vents for humidity in Hoth's atmosphere to freeze over.  More likely to freeze would be the fluids that kept engines, etc. running properly.  However, obviously these would be just as likely to freeze as in atmosphere.

I think the simple solution is just that the XWings were needed to guard the Gallofrees.  They WERE going up against a Star Destroyer and time was of the essence.
