Re: X-wing underpowered

The X-wing is quite a bit tougher than the Tie fighter - the extra health represents shields.

If you've ever played X-wing , XVT or alliance, all shields did was place an extra healthbar that had to be knocked down before your hull took damage. Shields were rechargable tho, and you had the option to move them to front, back, redirect the energy to engines or lasers...

This lead to nigh INVINCIBLE Tie defenders with 200% shields rivalling a small battleship, travelling faster than an awing with more firepower than a B-wing.

All ships had self repair- as when you took damage to your hull, sometimes systems like engines or weapons were hit and had to be repaired.

I really enjoyed those games and i welcome the new homing missiles for Awings as a step forward. I would love to see more in depth fighter combat.

However- as it is the game is really nicely balanced and you can't just choose a particular fighter and become invincible. I don't think that self repairing fighters is going to happen (although it would be nice, and discourage people from trying to ram with damaged fighters- kind of like self reloading torps)

I don't think there's a way to put shields into the game other than the gallofree type, which basically would make the x-wing indestructible in head to headlong distance shooting (which it alsready excels at)

I could be wrong tho.

Re: X-wing underpowered

Shields could be tied to counter measures. aka  'X'

We once had a prototype of a shield system, it was kind of odd, but a fun idea. Xwings had a second player which controlled shield direction. It was kinda neat :] I think at one time we talked about it being controlled by an autocontroller.

Neat stuff can still be done with fighter for sure, in a future release though, not the hotfix tongue It's a lot of work an balancing when you add in a new dimension to the combat like that, it's not just ROF and HP, its like a whole new level of the combat. Sort of like the missiles are.

Re: X-wing underpowered

Are you guys serious? TIEs have a hard time shooting it down, unless its a accurate shooter as a pilot, because it doesnt blow up in one second of shooting. But when you are flying a X-Wing, you just have to hold it down for a second and the TIE is gone. Maneuverability isnt so important thing, unless you do those loop fights. You shouldnt do them.

Conclusion: X-Wing and TIE are very balanced if you are a good pilot, you will suck in every fighter if you are a bad pilot.

haha, yea I hate those loop 'dog fights' it's like if you are chasing someone and they start that crap, what are they thinking? They are going to catch you? Very annoying.

Re: X-wing underpowered

In hindsight, I dislike the magical ability of R2 units to repair fighters in the Rogue Squadron series and the Galactic Conquest mod. Fighter beat up and down to 1% health? No prob, R2 will wave his magic stick and you'll be up and at it in no time!

X-Wings are awesome. Sure, they lose maneuverability in atmosphere or when faced with gravity (Death Star), but they're meant to.

Re: X-wing underpowered

Repairing is bound to the damage system.

AFIAK all Games based on the Battlefield Engine has a very simple damage system, you only deal structural Damage.
If your vehicle has 10 or 100% of it's health makes no difference, the ability to fight is the same.

Other games - like Descent Freespace - use a damage system with structural and critical damage.
In Freespace critical components of your fighter - like the engines - could be damaged. This damage could be repaired, the structural damage can't.

According to the lore the R2 Unit could repair critical damage, but not the structural damage.
And without critical damage in BF 2142, repairing makes no sense...

In BF 2142 some classes can repair nearby vehicles, this could add to the X-Wing.
But this means that 2 X-Wings must flight in formation to use the repair function.

Shield:
The HUD has two bars, IMHO it would possible to make one of the to regenerate.
Second it would possible to use the Shield system of BF 2142, press Countermeasures to get a shield (maybe only frontal ?)
But: even this doesn't collide with the StarWars lore, it needs more balancing.
For example: Faster spwantimes for the TIEs, more Tickets for the Ims.
