Re: Discussion: The Battle of Yavin, who needs a trench?

i think the trench has also the benefit of cover...
If you are in the trench, enemy fighters can't see you

About the "entering the trench":
How about a invisible shield over the trench (like the BF 2142 Titan Shields) so you can't enter the trench until the deflection towers are destroyed ?

With the destruction of the last tower, the shield vanishes ( only partial ? )

About the AA-Guns.
Color code them (if possible) in groups like red, blue ect and give the icons of the turrets in minimap the same color.
Or give each Deflection Tower a name (Exhaust Port Tower, ect... South Tower, ect...) and mount a sign with the name over each group of konsoles.
Giving Names to each tower would also improve communication over VOIP, because BF 2142 shows the name of each CP if you have a Attack / Defend order on it an press T.

Re: Discussion: The Battle of Yavin, who needs a trench?

I play half and half turrets/fighters.  Turrets are great, not underpowered not overpowered.
A skilled player can come up with a good 8-15 kills with a turret, in a pretty full server.
Think the most kills i got in a fighter was 10 in any given round 6-10 is normal.

As far as limiting or removing the trench run... You must be crazy, removing it would be disaster..
I think that most of us play this map to protect it, or to do the trench run.
Regardless of the strategy the Imps use.. Rebels just need to coordinate there attack better.
Everyone who plays Yavin was a noob to the map.. maybe detailed instructions in the load screen would help.
Also server spam so noobs can get aquainted to it faster.
If there was one change i would make to the map, It would be that the person who fires the death star destroying shot, would be recognized in bold print on screen at the end. That player would also recieve a generous amount of points for doing it.

If the Imps hold off the attack every player on the Imp side would recieve bonus point increase of say 10 points.

The only other change should be a health status bar above the towers, that shows on the mini map.. so people would target the weakest tower first, and at least they will know what and how much damage they are dealing and still needs to be dealt.

Do..or do not, there is no try !

Re: Discussion: The Battle of Yavin, who needs a trench?

All I know is there should be tons of turbo lasers on the OUTSIDE of the trench to encourage players to use the trench in the first place, as it was in the movies.

There should be a place to enter the trench indicated on the map that is free of covering fire, but the length of the trench lips should be covered with towers all the way to the port for the rest of the way.

If there  are too many, the map will get terrible lag.

Re: Discussion: The Battle of Yavin, who needs a trench?

I'm pissed off at this map. Was the highlight of GC, but here its just broken. It had a health bar for the objective, a constant tactical battle over the trench and every other action was clearly to destroy the deathstar.

Here the other objectives turn the map into 2 separate games and the imps don't have reason to defend the trench (which is the maps best strength). I know once in a while the rebels destroy the exhaust port last and that's a bit better but how often does that happen?
Also the turret's AI only seems to fire at you once your in the trench. The turrets don't get used by people because it takes ages to find the one you want.

You have to either remove the trench completely or fix it:
Need a permanent presence of imp fighters defending the trench.  The only way to do this make destroying the exhaust port end the game, unless anyone has a better idea.
Need turrets making the trench an advantage for the rebs. So only lining the trench with them. Not IN IT! (that's the fighter's job)

If you not sure this is better than the random dog fighting we have rite now, play GC_deathstar. What do you think roll

P.S. was just testing it with a ModDB player and he didn't seem to like it either.

The imps have a reason to defend the trench when the deflection shields come down, thus allow the rebels to kill the exhaust port. The rebels always destroy trhe exaust port last because it can't be destroyed first because it is shielded and when it is destroyed the round is over.

The AI simply takes a while to acquire players (2142 limitation) if you fly head on at them (like you are forced to do in the trench) they will always see you and attack.

If you watch the movie the TIEs didn't defend the trench until they realised the rebels were attacking there (you also see a rebel fighter take out a deflection tower). You will also note from the movie that their were one or two turrets in the trench. There is a grouping of turrets at the end of the trench directly above the exahuast port for dealing with pesky fighter that don't want to take the trench.

Destroying the exhaust port does end the game.

There are instructions in the load screen.
