I don't get it. Why should this be an excitement for oldschool gamers? I mean... they have all those titles already anyway... "YAY let's buy them again on steam" or what?

Its not, just LA thinking its big news. Some of those titles aint even worth getting. Starfighter is definitely one to avoid if your an X-Wing fan. The handy thing with steam is at least you won't lose a disk and its always available to get a hold of.

They also said they are straight ports, no improvements or changes.

Eh?? Er..no..
"The team here (alongside Steam) have worked on the old games to make them work in XP/Vista. Very low system requirements wink"

So there must be some sort of changes to prevent the older titles not having to rely on the likes of DOSbox.

While these ten titles are straight ports – so no Steam Achievements, and no fancy new graphics and sound a la Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition

Day of the Tentacle might be released too if this pack is succesful! I loved that game it was the same type of game as Fate of Atlantis, both never finished until this year hopefully if this goes through. Would love Rebel Assault to be released too, fun game even if it was very linear and Rouge Squadron 3d would be great.

Would be nice if they also had KOTOR 1 and 2 in it seeing as they put SWBF 2 in, maybe even SWBF 1 will come out. I am also getting interested in Monkey Island, didn't know it was a modern version of Fate of Atlantis and Day of the Tentacle gameplay wise.
