We need 3D textures for models, and you have to UV Map them onto the model, so it may be a bit different than what you've been doing.
Well, Im not sure how to create the UV maps and such. Im my past experiences all I did was receive the maps, then place a skin on the map. Then they would place the finished texture on the model and that would be it. Like this for instance. All I did was the face (from scratch).
Is that not what you are looking for?
