Topic: Star Wars Novels

Talking about authors in the Clone Wars thread made me wonder, who else here reads EU novels?

Personally I started reading Star Wars novels back when I was in primary school (Elementary school for the Americans), I used to go to the library regularly and I almost always came away with a handful of Star Wars and Animporph books.

More recently when I started working on FS (Wow that was about 6 years ago...), I started actually purchasing Star Wars novels, because they were useful to have around to cross check things when I looked them up on the Wook.

After a quick count I have 45 of the approximately 60 star wars novels set in the Imperial/GCW (Galactic civil war) era. As well as about 6 in the prequel era, and another 3 set in the NJO (New Jedi Order) onwards.

As the numbers demonstrate, my focus is really on the GCW, whilst I enjoyed the NJO novels as a child I always felt like it was a different universe. I don't have anything from the clone Wars unless you include Labyrinth of Evil and RoTS novelization, which of course occur in the dieing week of the war. At first it was because I wasn't interested but now it is more because the clone wars cartoon is currently messing with the continuity far to much to invest the read time at the moment.

Anyway what novels do other people have, what authors do you like, what novels were great, which were so bad you couldn't you finish them?

To help discussion here is the current list of novels on the Wook:

Re: Star Wars Novels

I have a few books, some of my favourite authors include Timothy Zahn and Kevin J Anderson.

Just bought one of the 501st books, was ok I guess.

I have the movie book so course, Truce at Bakura, X-Wing Wraith Squadron, Splinter of the minds eye, Thrawn Trilogy, Jedi Acadamy Trilogy, I Jedi, Children of the jedi, Darksaber, Planet of Twilight, Crystal Star, Black Fleet Crisis, and a couple of the NJO books.

Favourite book was I jedi, really enjoyed the way that one was written. Death Troopers was kind of fun, looking forward to getting hold of the prequel.

Re: Star Wars Novels

Pretty similar tastes here, used to get the old Star Wars books back in the 80's such as Splinter Of The Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster (who did the movie adaptations) to tide you over until the next movie came out, and of course the comics, used to get the Marvel UK ones that you used to get over here, some really good stories including the Shira Brie and Lumiya tales, Pariah was another good story arc from this era, they also explored Bothans if I remember rightly, long before the novels did.

Then after the movies had finished in the late 80's I'd turn to the Star Wars Roleplaying Game for my Star Wars fiction hit, lots of good stuff in here in the form of character, planet and hardware back stories, and general fiction in the various sourcebooks, which has gone on to feature, if not become the backbone in some cases of the EU.

Then the real boom in Star Wars reading came for me in the early 90's with the start of the Timothy Zahn Heir To The Empire novels, this was cracking stuff, and at around the same time Dark Horse comics started doing original new Star Wars comics including the Dark Empire series amongst others such as the X-Wing: Rogue Squadron books and comics which were a favourite of mine. At that time I was pretty regularly picking up most Star Wars novels that came out, but then as things do, time changes, and I had less and less time to read with on thing or another. I'd get the odd book here and there, pick up a collected graphic novel rather than the individual issues of a series, and now pretty much pick up the Star Wars coffee table reference books for research and the like rather than fiction. I think the last Star Wars fiction novel I picked up (not including graphic novels which I still get fairly regularly) would be Timothy Zahn's Outbound Flight, and that was years ago.

Never really got into The New Jedi Order so much, just seemed so far removed from the original source material to me, though the alien enemy from that sounded and looked interesting. I actually wrote a similar post Jedi set tale myself about an alien species invading the galaxy after the civil war ended, when I was about 12. I kid you not.

Re: Star Wars Novels

I'm a bit missing on the "Classics", but I think I own all the books NJO-Era onwards (or just the books released since then).  It's a fair bit different from regular Star Wars, but I find them much more enjoyable than Pre GCW stuff.

One thing I've taken to enjoying is Audiobooks. Since the release of the first Fate of the Jedi book, almost all my Star Wars purchases are in audio format, with a couple of exceptions.  The unabridged audiobooks are all brilliant (except for the books which are just... bad.  Red Harvest I'm looking at you), so I went and bought some of the older series (Thrawn and X-wing, etc).  Unfortunately, the older books are abridged, and seem to miss out on a *ton* of the story, so I'm going to have to buy a lot of those books in paper form (or e-books) in order to get the full story.

I really do recommend the audiobooks.  They aren't as boring as someone just reading the words, they also include some star wars music and SFX, and for someone like me who has problems trying to imagine how a character ever sounds, it's great to have a voice to put to the imagined face.  They were great for me when I was commuting on the bus every day, and they are still great for car journeys too.  I can also listen to them while doing stuff at work, which is a great way to pass the time.

Re: Star Wars Novels

Let's see what I've read...
I'll keep spoilers out of this, unless you guys say otherwise.

In chronological order;

Old Republic Era

The Darth Bane trilogy. First one was borderline good, and went downhill from there. Force powers from video games don't translate well into books.

Rise of the Empire Era

Outbound Flight. Quite enjoyed it.

Clone Wars Era

Order 66. Meh, nothing special to me. Wasn't bad, but not great either.

Rebellion Era

Star Wars Episode Six. Liked it a lot, you know what the characters feel even more. It's the movie on pages.

The Mandalorian Armor. Suffice to say I don't feel like reading the sequels to that. Once again, it wasn't bad per se.

Truce at Bakura. Pretty good. Would be worth a read if you haven't already.

New Republic Era

X-Wing series. Read about half of them, no particular order. Good reads all, but I prefer Stackpole more than Allston. And Starfighters of Adumar was just plain weird.

Jedi Academy Trilogy. I read the two last ones, quite enjoyable.

The Black Fleet Crisis. Read the second one in that trilogy, didn't make me want to read the others.

The Corellian Trilogy. I read the two last novels in this one, but man were they ever good. Definitely worth looking into.

The New Jedi Order Era.

Read one of the novels, really didn't like it. Not to mention that the whole  premise of the series put a bad taste in my mouth. Bunch of aliens with organic spaceships didn't interest me. But then again, some things were really cool. Hmmm. Well, guess I'm sort of conflicted.

The Swarm War trilogy. The end of The New Jedi Order series, but that weird war is over by then. Really great trilogy, think you guys would like it.

Legacy Era.

Legacy of the Force series. My favorite out of all the Star Wars series. The first novel is a little difficult to get into, but it picks up right by the second.  This series is more akin to those in the GCW era, more so than the others around it. Can't say much without spoiling anything, but it's awesome. This is my number one recommendation.

Fate of the Jedi series. So far I've read six out of nine, but it's so-so. Some good parts, and some bad parts.

And that's what I've read. Lots of good authors and novels, but you do get your fair share of lesser ones. I also didn't mention any of the short stories.

Thank you for the link, Un-Co.

Re: Star Wars Novels

Personally I would rank:
Best Series:
X-Wing (Rogue/Wraith) Squadron
-Stackpole and Allston both wrote an excellent series of books. What the novels do that no other series does; is give the story from the perspective of the grunt on the front lines. Sure those grunts are the best pilots in the galaxy; Wedge, Tycho, Hobbie and Wes, but it is refreshing to see something other than heads of state, Generals and Jedi.

The Han Solo Trilogy
- The back story of everyone's favourite smuggler. I always wanted to make a map or two for FS based of the events of these novels. The story opens with a young pick-pocket solo and follows him as he tries to escape his life of crime only to fall right back into it. Then his falls in and out of favour with Jabba the hutt, his first taste of the rebellion (Leaving a bad taste in his mouth) and ends on that fateful day in Challums cantina.

Thrawn Trilogy
-Theres really nothing that can be said about this series that hasn't been said before. THis is the seires that all but started the EU as we know it today. For me it was the mix of politics and military tactics that make it great.

Favourite Stand Alones:
Labyrinth of Evil
-For anyone who thinks the intro of RoTS was an unintelligible mess I definitely recommend this novel. The story basically covers the closing weeks of the clone wars, with Obi-wan and Anakin sent to capture Dooku and put an end to the war, mean while Mace Windu starts make some major steps towards discovering the identity of elusive Sith lord. The Novel ends with CIS's last desperate attempt to win the war, the epic attack on Courscant.

Traitor
-I read this when I was pretty young, so I may be overestimating it, but it really stood out for me. I haven't re-read it yet because it is in the NJO, but I do intend to. I remember reading somewhere this was the first EU novel to feature no characters from the films, it focusses on a captured Jacen Solo, a different view of the force and perhaps the most epic ending in any EU story.

Worst of the Worst:
The New Rebellion
-Ugh...
The Crystal Star
-The only star wars novel I have started reading and haven't finished
Death Star
-Someone really needs to reticon this mess away, imo parts of this book actually spoil ANH. As well as a bunch of continuity errors, and a character that calls himself Teh Roxxor...

Re: Star Wars Novels

Jacen Solo plays a HUGE part in the Legacy of the Force series. He's like the main character of it. So you should read it. Seriously.  big_smile
