Re: EA kills the Revive Team

Yes, the mod will work with an offline account.   Here is a fix for the BF2142.exe that will allow it that I was using before BF2142 Revive :

I tried this before I figured out how to create a generic profile.  If you have 2142 installed with a profile set up before then you should be fine.  For a new install, you may still need a generic profile.  Try with the BF2142 fix posted above first.  It should created a blank profile for you.    If anyone needs a generic profile, you can get it here:

Now, the reason that I would only be interested in trying to continue First Strike in BF2142 as stand alone is because my worse fears were realized.  I wasted a lot of time trying to get the mod going again by creating a new server and client versions and then Revive gets stopped in it's tracks.   It is just not worth it to be dependent on someone else again.

The other reason is player base.   Without enough players, it is just not worth the time.     In order to get new players for an old game is to be able to make it easy to get and easy to install.    BF2142 only had a cult following to begin with.  Sales of the game where decent, but nowhere near BF2.   EA was not impressed with the lackluster BF2142 sales, and they canceled any future expansion packs and any continued support of the modding community to include the promised release of a dedicated BF2142 editor.

Based on Project Reality still having a stand alone version, I am willing to bet that First Strike could do so as well.    As long as it only provides only the files needed to play First Strike.   There would be no BF2142 maps.

As far as converting First Strike maps to BF2142, as was already done with one map, I have no issues, I just don't see any benefit to FirstStrike.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

A little clarification example:

First of all 2142 is no longer being sold by EA, so It can only be purchased as a second hand DVD.   So, once the new player gets a hold of either a legal copy or an illegal download, once they get it installed, then they have to jump through all the hurdles to be able to play it:

On any version of Windows since XP, it has to be run in compatibility mode.   The 1.5 patch has to be downloaded and installed.   They new player can't even start up 2142 because the master account server is gone.   So, now they have to install a generic profile and use one of the master account work- arounds.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

If some of the maps are converted to play within 2142 with all of the Star Wars vehicles, weapons, and soldiers, then at least there would be some people playing and enjoying those First Strike maps.  That's the best that can be done for First Strike at this time.  Whenever the stripped down version of Mos Espa is played on the Reclamation server, everybody likes it.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

I followed this conversation and I completely have to agree to Dnamro that only a standalone version will make much sense.
Just look at the great S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mods of today, many of them are standalones as well.
People simply prefer finished standalones  over mods for old and dead games where you have to struggle a lot sometimes to even get it to work properly as mentioned above.
A standalone is simply a finished game without compatibility troubles or other issues (unable to launch, etc.) that result in conflicts with the vanilla game.

And yes, you could promote a standalone on pages like ModDB as a kinda entirely new game which everyone is free to try out, especially those who don't like the new Battlefront games so much like me.
If the mod stays like this, it will always be submerged under a dead game and therefore never be noticed very much in public.

The NovGames clan actually found a way to establish an own masterserver and ranking system etc. for BF2142 years before the great shutdown in 2014, they just didn't boasted about it in public like the people from revive network did when they reinvented the wheel after NovGames...
I think NovGames would even give you the required information how to do it, if that helps you. I know some of them and could talk to them.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

Dnamro, please reply and let me know if NovGames' solution is something for you.

Keep in mind that players wouldn't need any third party software like gameranger, only a First Strike (standalone) version with a modified .exe file that redirects to your own masterserver instead of the dead one from EA.
NovGames has already finished all these steps for BF2142 and can provide you the information you need.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

A standalone First Strike game would be great, unfortunately it is also completely ILLEGAL.  Dnamro would be distributing a game based on the coding of Battlefield 2142.  A standalone First Strike game would be a competitor to EA's Battlefront 2.  EA is the type of company that would quickly send him a cease and desist letter just like they did with the Revive team.

The only legal way to partially revive first strike is, as I previously stated, convert some of the maps to play within 2142 on the Reclamation server through gameranger.

Re: EA kills the Revive Team

Well, I think I may have figured out the stability bug after all.  There is definitely a stability issue with autocontrollers.   The issue is entering an autocontrolled device occasionally may cause a crash.  Also autocontrolled weapons have other issues, like the loss of zoom capability.
