Topic: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

This was an idea that a friend of mine asked me, and I couldn't answer it it would be possible using the Battlefield 2 engine or not. The idea was, basically, to integrate the Endor ground and space combat maps into a single map, where each player is free to spawn as either a ground trooper battling to destroy or defend the Death Star shield down on the surface of Endor, or a capital ship or fighter pilot battling it out up in space over the moon's surface. The dynamics of the mission would be modeled after the movies, of course, meaning the mission would be divided into two phases (where the second may or not be reached, depending on the success of the Alliance troops on the moon surface).

Phase one objectives:

Rebel Alliance ground troops: destroy the Death Star shield generator
Imperial ground troops: defend the Death Star shield generator, defeat the Rebel Alliance saboteur strike force
Rebel Alliance fleet: survive against the superior Imperial fleet and the Death Star until the Death Star shield has been destroyed
Imperial fleet: destroy as much of the Alliance fleet as possible

If the rebel ground troops complete their main objective, the ground spawn points are disabled and the second part of the mission takes place exclusively in space, with the following phase two objectives:

Rebel Alliance capital ships: survive until the Death Star is destroyed, give cover for fighters
Rebel Alliance fighters: fly into the Death Star and blow up the core reactor
Imperial fleet: defend the Death Star and annihilate the Alliance fleet

The main problem with designing a map like this that I foresaw would be building a three-dimensional map large enough for a ground battle and a space battle to take place simultaneously. But if the mission map could somehow be divided into two zones, where it is impossible for a ship to travel to the surface zone and likewise impossible for ground troopers to reach the space zone, maybe it would be possible? I'm sure the solution is much more technically challenging that simply separating the Endor ground and space missions, but the end result would also be way cooler, not to mention truer to the feeling of the films.

Some ace BF2 map designer know just what it would take to do something like this, if at all possible?

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

That's a very good idea. In fact I was thinking of the same thing. However it can't be done with the BF 2 Engine, or any current engine at all I think. Also it would lag A LOT.

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

well bf2 maps can get absolutely huge, but im affraid not nearly as big as this map would need to be

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

Yeah, it would have to be the best mission ever EVER made and I desperately would like, but the implications of a map that can fit in a ground map and a Death Star Catering space would have to be massive.

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

it would have to be 2 maps.. 1 ground 1 space. may even 3 with the death star included as its so damn large. we have discussed if it was possible to do space and ground but multiplayer engines arnt at that stage yet. would just be too much for a server and client machines to handle.. shame though it would be the ultmate battle

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

One to hold on for the future tho, but if gaming technology evolves anytime soon which it may I expect something like that would crop up in SW:Battlefront III

Re: Idea for the Endor ground and space maps

How about this though: You play the first battle, on Endor ground, and then when somebody wins, depending on who wins, the server then advances to the next appropriate map. It wouldn't be as fluid, and I'm not sure if it could be done, but it's an idea hehe.
