Re: V-Wing and more

The phantom no.  However it was based on an earlier model of the same design (sans cloaking device), the TIE V-38 assault fighter; an older design which fell out of favour within the empire due to some shortcomings and replaced entirely by the standard TIE fighter.  It definately existed (both with and without cloak) around the time of the original trilogy as the non-cloak version was already an outdated design when Darth Vader took over the cloaking project.

The overall look of it is great though as it retains that "classic empire" look about it while remaining unique and different. I'm sure we could find some interesting uses for it also.  Anything from recon intelligence ship to a hybrid fighter/bomber.  If we were really obsessed we could always give it a cloaking device too, and maybe make it a special unlock-type thing even if it were that way set up.  It's also a two seater, so that opens up more possibilities as most all other TIE craft are single-seat vessels

Re: V-Wing and more

Hmm, sounds like it would make a fantastic scout craft stealthed or not. I absolutely love 2 man ships (Its so neat to be in a first person view and have mouse control, like being the gunner in Bf2's f-15), and having a two man crew could function great for a scout craft, with one guy focusing on flying and maneuvers while the other keep his eyes peeled for enemy cap ships.
Perhaps the second guy might have some sort of tracking bug launcher or missile he can fire and affix to an enemy cap ship. The bug could constantly report the enemy cap ship on the team's minimap, giving a huge advantage on maps reminiscent of GC's task force.

Re: V-Wing and more

I'm sure this was discussed a few months back. The Defender was agreed to be both too rare and too powerful; the TIE Phantom too rare.

The TIE-MKII thing is simply the TIE Avenger/Advanced, I remember that pick from TIE Fighter

Arc, if you want a scout vessel, why not use a TIE Shuttle? It was in Episode 5 (albeit taking up a rather small percentage of the screen for 5 seconds), and can be very easily converted from a Tie Bomber model (just lop off the bomb dropper). It carried a pilot and two passengers.

Re: V-Wing and more

So you're saying no Defenders because they're overpowered??

I'd like to point out that basically Defenders are the Imp equivalent of B-Wings, which are also overpowered. If you cut out Defenders then you leave the Rebels with a ship so powerful it can take down a capital ship, and the Empire with no counter fighter.

Re: V-Wing and more

The defender is faster than an A-Wing. The B-Wing is slower than a TIE Bomber.

The idea of this mod is to try and stay away from making both teams carbon copies of each other, like BF2142. BF2 did this to some extent, but since the unlocks were so much better than normal weapons the effect failed. The idea is to make flying both sides' ships a different experience. Imperial ships are fast and manoeuverable, but weak. They'll probably take more skill to fly than their Rebel counterparts. Rebel ships will be slower and better armored. However, if tested thoroughly it will balance out.

Technically, the Imperial's counterpart to the B-Wing was the Assault Gunboat, but thats not going in the mod right now.

Re: V-Wing and more

Assault Gunboats were lame, and besides they never had a very Imperial feel to them.

As for speeds...

Name/Model#  B-wing

The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels wrote:

B-Wing
MAXIMUM SPEED: 2,390G/950 KPH

TIE Bomber
MAXIMUM SPEED:2,380G/850 KPH

The B-Wing is faster.

Also, let's look at the armament of the B-Wing:

X-Wing: The Official Strategy Guide wrote:

Name/Model#  B-wing
Weapons:  Three Gyrhil R-9X Laser Cannons (single fire or fire-linked)
Three ArMek SW-7a Ion Cannons (singe fire or fire linked)
Three Krupx MG9 Proton Torpedo Launchers (6 torpedoes each)
Twin Auto-Blasters

That's two blasters on the cockpit, one laser cannon and one ion cannon on each of the three wings, two proton torp launchers in the middle, one at the bottom of the main wing. Now, THAT'S overpowered!!

Re: V-Wing and more

Thats maximum speed. With no power to shields.

Anyway, whatever its speed, the TIE Defender is still faster than an A-Wing. The Defender goes at 1680 kph and the A-Wing at 1300 kph.
