Topic: Auto-Destruct on abandoned ships

With all this talk of bailing ships going on, we need an auto-destruct. Since there's no gravity, ships are going to float around for ages. Ideally they should explode after 2 mins or so.

Hmm...yeah. Good point. It would suck to be stuck on your capital ship because people bail their ships in space, leaving none left in the hanger. This is a good idea, but why wait 2 minutes? The ship should blow up right after the pilot exits. No point in leaving it floating around aimlessly even if it's only for a short period of time.

The fighters will respawn if they're destroyed.... And people can't bail.....

Besides I'm not sure if it'd be a good idea to have that feature in a map where the focus is space combat since naturally your enemy would want to board and activate that feature, thus killing everyone leaving one side victorious with hardly any fighting going on. It would further take away from the flying experience because then your team would have to focus more on internal defense than flying.

Although I can see this MAYBE in a Judicator type map if something like that is ever reproduced.

What if the guy bails and the enemy doesn't blow up his ship after? If there's no grav it'll just be sitting out there, unaccessible by anyone. That's why the ship should self destruct a few seconds after being bailed.

Yeah, I guess that would solve that problem, as long as it's only the pilot who can't bail since the gunner/passanger should be able to leave if their pilot is a smacktard. But then if the pilot manning something like a y-wing that has a pilot and gunner position, he could just switch to the gunner's place if he's by himself and bail out that way. Unless of course the devs make it so that you can't switch places in a ship. Gah, all these ifs and buts are giving me a headache.

They blow up by themselves depending on how many seconds are set for it.

True, but it should be very few seconds since the ship would be absolutly useless sitting there. People wouldn't be able to get back inside it and it would just be holding up pilots back at the hanger. With ground maps the time should be extended to allow the enemy to rightly steal the foolish bailer's ship, but on space maps this time should be set to near nothing, thereby giving it the impression it self-destructed.
