Why is there such a dilema about this?
If you get into a ship with some moron who can't fly, well you've learned your lesson haven't you? And have you forgotten that points don't really matter? If your really scared about getting in with a pilot that sucks, well tough, don't get in with people you don't trust then.
And if you guys really want to get petty about it... Make it so the gunner can switch to the pilot seat, but the pilot can't switch to the gunner seat. That way, if the pilot dies (shot through glass) you can switch to the front and fly away, however that would be physically impossible since the cockpits are WAAAY too small.
And also the whole "gunners should be able to bail" thing is retarded because the cockpit only has one hatch keeping the pilots safe from the outside, if one guy leaves, the hatch must open for both of them, and both guys would have to get out. Rebels don't wear stuff to protect them from the outside anyways, ever seen a oxygen mask on them while they're cruisin around in the movies? No.
