I have a serious problem with it, on multiple levels.
Firstly and foremostly, I play games to get away. I don't watch television because I can't stand the ads. I maintain a healthy wall of popup blockers so I am not subjected to advertising. The last thing I want is for huge logos and banners to be strung up across my virtual "holiday getaway" encouraging me to buy things. I work for a living, my money is important to me.
Second, The fact that the game came out at full price yet they are still going to sell more slots to advertising is quite offensive. I don't want to pay money for a product just to be subjected to people trying to ram products down my throat.
Third, they obviously spent time and money in installing this. That is time and money they didn't spend fixing all the problems with the game before releasing. It is a glaring reminder of how EA is only concerned with one thing: money. The quality of their product and the actual players don't matter a blind slippery slap to this company, so long as they get their money. With that kind of attitude I don't see why I should help them get any more money at all.
Fourth, I am wholely against my information being gathered, especially by ad companies who have even less concern for my information than EA Games does for its customers. They don't care in any way whatsoever what happens to my information, providing they can make a buck off of me. Any information they can gather that I can't prevent is wholely against my wishes yet I'm powerless to do anything.
Fifth, I am truly angered that I cannot opt out of this thing, and uninstall the information gathering program. This is spyware in its truest form, and I hate the fact it's on my machine. If I was rich I would have taken EA to court over it. But sadly I'm working-class, and as such our rights, freedoms, and options are a lot more limited here in America.
Anyway, I hope that covers a few points about why I'm upset about the advertising system. The only good news is we do not have to put the advertising in our mod itself. Indeed, if we had to then we couldn't make the mod. And as I don't actually play 2142 (I didn't find it that good of a game) nor did I pay for this program (provided by a kind benefactor which now encourages me to complete the mod for them because of the act of support) several of my arguments are really in the hypothetical anyway.
