Topic: Range of blaster bolts and weapons in general?
If anyone's played Massive's fantastic RTT Ground Control (and as a side note, as it's currently freeware, you'll want to try it if you haven't already!), you'll have fond memories of aerodyne (aircraft) dogfights where shots would fly in all directions. The thing was that many of the weapons in-game had infinite range, even though you had to be within a certain range to fire them. Therefore, dogfights great both on the map (as all shots fired, regardless of whether the player's units could see them, were marked on the map as white dots) and in the actual game, as you could position your camera away from the dogfight and see the occasional salvo of stray energy bolts or cannon rounds come whizzing by.
While I'm not advocating that blaster bolts or projectiles should be visible on the map in FS (OK, maybe some should be, it'd be interesting to how that worked, but I can't really tell what that'd be), or that blasters should have infinite range, but it made me wonder, first of all, how long the range of weapons will typically be in FS? Secondly, will blaster bolts lose power as they travel?
Come to think of it, I'd actually like it if there was some sort of weapon that had infinite or near-infinite range, or at least very long range. It would be cool to approach a gunfight and have the occasional stray bolts fly past you. The problem is that I can't for the life of me think of what kind of weapon that'd be.
