battlefield 2142's one weakness is its setting. the original game managed a coherent atmosphere by sticking closely to real ww2 tech; left to assemble a universe of thier own for 2142, the team produced a rather uninspiring hodge-podge of ideas.
well, there's one easy solution: make a total conversion to add a much loved sci-fi world to bf2142. enter stormtroopers, wookies and all things star wars, and first strike.
while the team includes some staff from the original GC, its not a direct sequel. it focuses around the galactic civil war, and aims to recreate some of the mostmemorable scenes of the movies. Battle of hoth? certainly. Battle of endor? definately. Death Star trench0run? You betcha.
As that last locale implies, the mod includes fully functioning dogfighting in space (which is handy, as luke legging it along the surface of the death star with a grenade in his hand may be frustrating the force a bit too much). this is promised to be more fluid that the dogfighting in GC, as certain technical issues have also been conquered. Expect enormous capital ships, proper zero-g and all the trappings of a deep-space laser-fist-fight (with vessels).
the teamsstated aim is the admirably high-shooting desire to be the most accurate star wars fps ever, so ther'ye cramming in every atmospheric thing they can manage. planned vessels include the array of X,Y,A,B and E-wing ships on the rebel side, with evil-looking TIE-fighter array for the imperials, and thats without getting into all the shuttles and cruisers. on the ground, depending on the mission you're playing, you'll be seeing everytihng from speeder bikes to landspeeders to the empires finest walkers (AT-AT, AT-ST, AT-PT and BigTrak, the programmable '80s toy). also, following on from the class systems in bf2142, we'll be seeing such things as stormtroopers in the assalut role, bothan spies in the special class, mon calamari in the officer rle and the scout troopers in recon. the one thing you wont be seeing is jedi, because they " were very rare at the time of the mod, as they had been wiped out by the emeror and darth vader, and none will be making an apreance in this mod" acordind to the dev team. and you might reply "yeah right. you ojust thought it sounded lioke too much work", until you see the exact size of the challenge the team has set themselfes. they'll be saving all their powers of force just to get all tis working in-game.
