In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end... it didn't.

True to today's strategy and tactical games, you can call in artillery, air strikes, and lots of other fun stuff.

Drop Ship entering atmosph... er, wait, no. Wrong game.

Playing as Support gives you access to the Heavy Artillery unit, which in turn lets you fire volleys of rockets.

Anyone else anxious for this release? Personally, since I loved Ground Control and was disappointed by its sequel, Ground Control II, I don't quite know what to expect, but I have to admit I'm fairly sceptical. I feel one of the things Massive did wrong when they made the sequel was to implement a Force Commander-style system of reinforcements paid for by points gained on the battlefield. The original Ground Control was like Sudden Strike, or for that matter chess, where you have a starting army and then had to use it the best you could, with nearly no reinforcements on hand. In Ground Control II, killing enemies and holding certain zones gave you points to spend on reinforcements, which drastically reduced the experience for me. Fair enough for MP, but in SP it's just... nah.

PS: The storyline revolves around the USSR invading Europe in '89. To keep the US from intervening, they also land troops on the US West Coast. This attack takes the US completely by surprise, however, and what was intended as a small-scale diversion by expendable troops develops into a full-scale invasion. You'll fight in Eurasia and America, as NATO, the US, or the Soviet Union.

Looks excellent and sounds like a good concept too.

Re: In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end...

It is. Best thing is that like how FPS games have classes (anti-tank, sniper, etc.), this game has different roles. If you choose to play as Support, you get anti-air, a demolition engineer, artillery, and so on to choose from. If you play as Air, you get helicopters. Armour gives you tanks. And so on. So you have to build up a team of varied roles and work as a team to get them to work. C&C Generals' expansion pack had this, but never took it nearly this far as every 'Commander' was self-sufficient.

The fact that trees, bridges, houses, and so on can be destroyed like in RTS games sounds quite great, too, as do the game modes. I'm so buying this when it comes out.

For an idea of what the game is like, I recommend you get Ground Control free (and completely legal) from FilePlanet. There's even an SDK out, at massive.net, if you want to resurrect the game with some modding. I always dreamed of a GC-> Star Wars Total Conversion tongue .

Re: In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end...

What, you where disspointed with GC2? That game is just as good as original GC!!! And its still as pretty as most modern games today (or prettier).

Damn, I so wish someone would have made a GC2 mod for BF. Translating the urban combat areas would have been amazing. I remember reading about such a mod early after the BF2 release, but it went missing I suppose.

Re: In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end...

I know the feeling. I once wondered if I should start a GC mod for BF2. I even jotted down some notes on what the classes could be, how it'd work... but no, never came to fruition. I hope someone else picks it up some day.

I'm glad for your sake you feel that way. My problems:
-Different stances instead of special weapons.
-Reinforcements and control points.
-Level of customization.
-How the plot got eerie late in the Crayven campaign and the feeling increased as you played through the Order campaign.

I wrote a good deal more about GC in this thread, in particular this post.

99% of mods do, in my experience. As a matter of fact, I don't really get excited when I hear of new mods anymore, I just think, 'oh well, it's going to collapse in a month or six anyways'. Even when mods seem to be moving along perfectly, like FS is now, I'm anxious, halfway just waiting for it to grind to a halt and be abandoned. The high failure rate, I suppose, comes in a large part from people not realizing how much work modding is. Better to start small, with a mini-mod, and then gradually work your way up. I learned a lot from working for Warp, but I learned even more when I made my little mini-mod for BF2 that did little except make all wrecks but those of planes and choppers stay for five minutes. It never got released, but I was proud of it, and it was big fun.

Re: In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end...

I know what you're saying. My minimods where never released either, except a mini helicopter (mesh for Kubelcopters), lol.

Still, the GC setting would have made an excellent BF mod. Hell it doesnt even have to do anything but bring the buildings and maps into BF2142, its close enough wink

Re: In 1989, the Cold War was supposed to end...

I think the BF2142 customization system would've worked great with GC's customization system, too. Two classes, each with their regular weapons as well as a choice of the special weapons and tools of GC. Marines would have their shield-shaped rifle, and a choice of rifle-mounted mortars or rocket launchers. I'd also let drop zones and APCs be spawn points, and have bases and xenofacts and such by control points you can't spawn at... [dreams on smile ]

I would've loved to climb the ramp of an APC, have it close behind me, and sit there in the thing's interior on my way to battle.
