One time while playing GC, my X-wing was about to explode, so I jumped, despite the fact that there were no chutes. To my amazment, I was on a collision course with a  landspeeder parked on the ground, so I instinctivley spammed the E button and managed to survive the fall by entering the vehicle. (there is no luck, there is the force) that must be how Luke survived, he spammed the E button as he was approaching that tube thing.
