Re: Some thoughts regarding space...

There is something there that tells you your orientation, but really the HUD icons are your best et because orientation doesnt really amtter as long as you are headed in the right direction.

Aa version that has differences in the "top" and "bottom" might be able to be done but its probably isnt at the top of the priority list.

Re: Some thoughts regarding space...

Out of all the things pointed out in this thread, the one thing I can agree on that would be nifty is damage inflicted from flying too close to capital ship engines, aka engine wash.  The blind spot behind a Correllian Corvette is perfectly legitimate as I remember it being cited in a couple of X-Wing missions, but it shouldn't be possible to just park right behind it for an extended period of time and pummel it.

I'm not a fan of health bars for capital ships as that's a bit more arcadey than just having radar, but what I would support would be damage effects such as electrical shorts running the length of the ship, or small fires coming from various points on the capital ship when increasingly damaged.

As far as orientation, space is 3D.  The only boundaries you need to worry about are the sides of the map in four directions, and it is easy to check your orientation using the artificial horizon on the HUD.

not really -.- the Ties get blown apart in about what 3-4 hits the x-wings take more then that because they need the time to loose the Tie or get a friend to help them thats why there are squads and team mates plus...comon its starwars thats how it has been forever changing that would just make more people mad

Since when should an x-wing have to wait for a friend to take a tie off him? X wings are imperial designed space superiority fighters that should be able to take on 3-4 ties at once in the hands of an experienced pilot (i realize this would cause balance issues in a game).  But maybe it would be possible to make it so that the imperials always had 2/3 of the people and the rebels 1/3? and then make the x wings as powerful as they should be? If you want lore examples, rougue sqaudron could take out an entire imperial star destroyer single handedly along with its entire compliment of tie fighters/interceptors/bombers withough losing a single pilot, flying x wings of course. (again, i realize that much unbalance simply wouldn't be possible in a game, but 1 tie fighter should not be a match for 1 x wing). But in the Galactic civil war the rebels would always win any evenly numbered fighter engagement, fighters raiding were what the rebels relied on, where as the empire relied on thier mass numbers to counter the superior fighters of the alliance. So if you really wanted to be realistic about it, i guess i would suggest to try making the rebels rely on thier fighters to take down either a larger number of imperial ties, or maybe a better way to do it would be to give the imperials superior capitol ships (which they had) and make the rebel fighters do most of the job of taking them down as well as the inferior imperial ties.

Please don't start throwing lore around tongue

X-Wings = slower, stronger
TIE Fighters = faster, fragile

FS seems to keep pretty close to this, at least for me.

Re: Some thoughts regarding space...

Also in the x wing books, again, if you are using them as sources of information, if not you can just ignore me.  The huge myth is that tie fighters are in fact faster than x wings, which they are not at all, they actualy have the exact same top speed.  Tie fighters are slightly more manuverable, but not by very much.  Interceptors do feature an engine upgrade though, making them slightly faster, along with even better manuverability.
